Creativity is akin to insanity, say scientists who have been studying how the mind works.

Brain scans reveal striking similarities in the thought pathways of highly creative people and those with schizophrenia.

Both groups lack important receptors used to filter and direct thought.

It could be this uninhibited processing that allows creative people to "think outside the box", say experts from Sweden's Karolinska Institute.

In some people, it leads to mental illness.

Besides, hasn't this been common knowledge for quite a while?

Think there's more than mere correlation, though.

Not really 'knowledge' but it's been speculated.

think of it this way: creativity means thinking uniquely, and differently, right?

what does insanity mean?

thinking differently than most people.

seems pretty clear to me.
#15
"Creativity is uncomfortable. It is their dissatisfaction with the present that drives them on to make changes.

"Creative people, like those with psychotic illnesses, tend to see the world differently to most. It's like looking at a shattered mirror. They see the world in a fractured way.

Eh... not all that seams totally true, such as this. ^

How is viewing something different to the majority like looking at a shattered mirror?
It's a conspiracy, man, government is trying to scare creative people into being robots!!

Just step yourself outside, and look up at the stars above.

think of Dali's paintings

are they deranged, or creative?

Intelligently made, or a product of insanity?
Can you really make a difference in that case?

Both?

Still, there's a definition of insane and one of creative. You can be both, either or none.

well obviosuly, but I still think there's a connection.

And that's what I said in my original post, how do we define insane?
do we define insanity as a mental deficiencey, like Multiple Sclerosis?

I still think so, too, but I dont get what point you're trying to make

Here's the wiki definition of insanity:

1. Exhibiting unsoundness or disorder of mind; not sane; mad; deranged in mind; delirious; distracted.
2. Used by, or appropriated to, insane persons; as, an insane hospital.
3. Causing insanity or madness.
4. Characterized by insanity or the utmost folly; chimerical; unpractical; as, an insane plan, attempt, etc.

this could be attributed to more than only a couple of artists.

I guess there is some connection, but its a rare one. Creative people are more often called weird. Insane has a more negative load compared to weird, IMO.

^ Have you see how some "normal" people are. Hell I'd give credit to anybody that has ever done something a bit differently/creatively if only merely for the fact some "normal" people are so devoid of individuality or doing something their own way that it's disgusting! Embrace your insanity people! Being another sheep living in the footsteps of others before them is a waste of life! hehehe.

Mental illness runs in my family and I've had noted manic and depressive episodes sporadically over the years.. usually I have to be heavily stressed to get to a point of being delusional and what could get my locked into a mental hospital but.. it's all good fun . Left-handed too, I really have my ducks in a row for belonging to the crazy camp..
#38
Most definitely. I'm pretty sure most painters were insane, and I think a lot of songwriters and at least half-insane.
