Hollywood star Dennis Hopper has died at the age of 74 after a long battle with prostate cancer.

The hard-living screen icon died at 8:15 a.m surrounded by family and friends, a close friend of the star's confirmed today.

Hopper looked frail when he made a rare appearance in LA this March at the unveiling of his star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame.

Hopper began his career in 1955 aged 19 in the teenage rebellion film 'Rebel Without a Cause' with James Dean.

But he hit the big time with Easy Rider in 1969, which he also wrote and directed, and starred alongside Peter Fonda in the story of two drug-dealing bikers travelling through the American Deep South.

He also starred in Apocalypse Now, Rumblefish and Speed and his last major feature film appearance was in 2008 when he starred in Elegy alongside Sir Ben Kingsley, Penelooe Cruz and Debbie Harry.

Nah. It's just that the older generations of celebrities/actors/musicians are getting older, and death is a natural part of life. Sad, but it just happens.

Get a little more defensive, there.

One of the most influential figures in Hollywood history. As an actor, he had a neurotic and enigmatic charisma. As a director, he was the pre-cursor to the Coppolas, De Palmas, and Scorceses that dominated Hollywood in the 1970s.

One of the biggest Talents in cinema.
I'll play it and tell you what it is later.

Nope. But he was in Apocalypse Now, which might be the best movie ever made.

Clearly I was stating a fact. Maybe you guys should check your sources.

well this guy was 74. i wouldn't call it out of the ordinary for a 74 year-old to die.

it's not like MJ who was only 50. Gary Coleman, 42. The Rev, 28. Paul Gray, 38

Anyway, R.I.P Dennis
