Hey community,

here's a cover of "Before I Forget" by slipknot. I used a backing track, which was essentially the whole song without the guitars.

I think I came pretty cose to the original tone...

Here's the link:

Thanks, dude!
No tabs. Good ol' ears did the job!

The tone is a combination of the "Shred" ampsim, some clever post processing with compressors and limiters and for the biggest part my "ToneVampIRe" cabinet responses.

You can download and check em' out here, if you like:

when you can free yourself from those "Tabs" you'll become better faster. Those who play by ear aren't slaves to Tabs.
Now running an Eleven Rack with Pro Tools 10.3.3 - it's amazing and I'm having ball with it - worth every penny. PT 10 is tops IMO and the Eleven Rack is a work of art!

I agree, strangedogs!

If you try to analyze a song only by ear, you'll notice yourself not only listening to the song, but actually understanding it. You'll get to know all those little details of a song and begin - as corny as it may sound - to really understanda song

I knew the song "Before I Forget" since it came out in 2004. And yet it bcame my favorite song lately, when I created the impulses...

Thanks for your thoughts so far guys!

I wouldn't consider myself a slave to tabs; I use them because I'm lazy haha. But every now and then I'll hear a song that inspires me so much, I just learn it by ear.

Anyway, TS, great cover man. Love the sound quality, the tone, everything.

R.I.P. Ronnie James Dio. Supplied amazing music to both me and my mother.

He will be missed.

I think when you're doing covers and laying the original track over you need to bring your guitars way up so they are with the vocals. Because I'm not familiar with this song and I can't pick out your guitar.

^ Pretty much what he said ^

The thing was perfect, and the guitar volume is spot on with the song, but for a cover I think it should be brought out a little more.

Other than that.... I just can't seem to find any thing to crit haha. Maybe the muting is off in some parts, but that is about it.

What do you mean, you can't "pick out my guitar" and/or that "I have to bring up my guitars that they are with the vocals"?

The only guitars heard in the song are mine. No guitars in the backing track... so you should pretty easily make out my guitars.

The guitar volume is even a bit higher than the original. I didn't want to prove that I could play that song. I wanted to prove that I was able to recreate their tone. So raising the volume was definately not an option!

But thanks for your comment, I guess!

Thanks dude! I've worked the project over now and the updated one is even more authentic. I'm gonna post this one next week.

Don't tread on my name son! Ach... whatever. The name was born in 1997 and has a lot more to do with the mathematical object than with that movie!

Thanks for your input, people!
