Alright, so I want to start recording and making music and I was wondering what software would be best for me. My influences are Kid Cudi and Nine Inch Nails. I want to be able to make beats on my computer as well as record stuff from my guitar and other instruments and mix them as well. I'm also going to be recording my voice as well, so what do you guys suggest? Thanks in advance.

Trent Reznor uses Ableton Live, I'd imagine Kid Cudi using something similar too. Ableton Live is all kinds of awesome.

I've heard nothing but good things about Ableton Live. I don't know how well the recording system is, but for arrangement and production it's amazing. If you don't mind the learning curve, Renoise is really good (it's what I use.) Gives you a lot of control over your beat.

Here's most of them: http://synth.freehostia.com/daw.html
None is better than the other, but make sure you learn the one you pick inside and out, and learn your keyboard shortcuts.
