I'm changing the stock pickup in my yamaha pacfica for a SD pearly gates. I've taken the pickguard off the pacifica and now notice there are 2 wires coming out of the humbucker that's already installed and 4 (plus a bare earth wire?) coming from the new pickup.

Which to i use?

It's currently:
Thick red wire => volume pot
Thin White wire => Pickup selector

I have:
Bare, Red, White, Black and Blue

Blue? you mean green?

The white and red wires are soldered together and taped off. The green and bare wires are grounded. the black wire goes to the switch.

if it sounds out of phase, swap the green and black wires. bare stays grounded.

Basically, the wires are so that you can make the thing work as a single coil if you want to.

Join the green and bare wires, they go do ground. The red and white wires should be soldered together, not touching anything. The black is hot, or positive if you like.

If you want, the red and white can be connected to ground via a switch, making a single coil, although it won't sound quite the same.

To confirm i should have:
Green+Bare => ground
Red + White => Nowhere
Black => Pickup selector

What goes to the volume pot?
