I just flicked on the radio and heard the tail end of a song that I thought might've been Pearl Jam, or Silverchair, or Live, or Eskimo Joe, probably not Metallica though. How come so many bands go with that sound? I never heard anything good said about it.

I like a fairly punchy snare when its in the right context. For blast beats its perfect, but for other genres, not so much.
