Can I just toss it in a bowl of CLR for a while and then wipe it down?

My thoughts are that even if you use CLR, you would want to give it an oil bath anyways, just to get some oils back into the metal. Its good for it and will help keep it from rusting again. Either that, or clean it well with an alcohol based cleaner to remove any oils and give it a new paint job.

CLR if you're talking about the gun cleaning product is fantastic for this, use a brass fine-bristled brush like you use for cleaning your slide and action to get the rust off, and use hoppes or CLR non-solvent gun oil protectant afterwards.

Even better than CLR is EEZOX. Got top ratings for being solvent, cleaner, and protectant coating all in one product. After scrubbing and clenaing wipe on, let sit 5 minutes, wipe off and let dry completely for months of protection.
