Clips and pictures of a mod I did on page 4!

Alright finally got a ****ing module haha.

It's the modern module. Just a few years ago it got discontinued but it sounds pretty good to me. It's just soo scooped when compared to the K88.

Here's a clip I did of a full ass tone test of the K88 and RM100. You get to hear me blabber (Wow that's a word? ) about what's turned on and what's playing. It's pretty self-explanatory so a review isn't really needed. Check it out.

Clip
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3602793/Tone%20Test.mp3

Same riff as above but the gain is at 3 o clock on both amps.

Calm down. Just wait.

The RM100 is a modular tube amp that you switch out different modules for different tones.

Yes, yes, yes, and actually yes but you need to have circuitry knowledge. Extremely modifiable. I'm doing that this weekend. Adding switches and lower capacitors to tighten it up.

Clip is up.

Sounds good, I kinda want a RM100, but the K88 does sound a little better. The module does seem to get lost a bit in the stereo clip.

Also, happy NMD.
#9
Yeah that module is really nothing compared to the modded modules you can get. One called the Benzin gets EXTREMELY close to a Herbert Channel 3 with the right tubes and settings.

I think even the RM20 or RM22 would be a nice practice amp to have around. Very versatile and modifiable.

Good clip. Nice playing.

Thanks man. It was rough playing the same damn riff at least 12 times hahah. It just got so old.

Off to prom in half an hour.

Well three main people do them on the MTS board. Jaded Faith (Rob) is from New Jersey. He has the best prices, fastest shipping, and quickest mods out of all of them. I did his website too for Rob as well.

http://www.jadedfaithmods.com/

Then you have Gigmods(Pete) He's from the mid west and is known for his Mark and Soldano mods.

http://www.gigmods.com/

Last is Anthony from Salvation. He has the best quality/best sounding mods but he lives in Austria so it's a hassle when it comes to shipping and his prices are highest but so is the resale.

No actual website but here's soundclips. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=909142&content=music and here's his other page on the MTS website. http://mtsforum.grailtone.com/viewtopic.php?t=5923

This is the layout of the Top Boost module. It's apparently the closest to the modern since it has the same layout.

Here's the guys of the modern.

Here's a HiRes shot I did too.

I know the C3 is a .0047uf so if I change it to like a .0015 uf or something close it should tighten up a lot.

Here's a schematic for a module called the SL+. It's basically a JCM800 and it applies to most modules.

http://www.amp-rocks.com/drafts/SL_1.pdf

SL+ PCB - http://www.grailtone.com/images/randall-pdf/SLPlus_PCB.pdf

Top Boost PCB - http://www.grailtone.com/images/randall-pdf/SLPlus_PCB.pdf

Looks like mine has the same PCB so it's setup the same just with different ratings all over.

There we go, that helps. If it's the same part numbers...

It looks like the modern follows the same topology as a Marshall tonestack.
I obviously can't read the part numbers in yours pics...
Relevant parts would be...
C14
C16
C17
R31
VR2, 3 and 4 are also kinda important...but eh.
If you can read those off the Modern module, I'll know what the tonestack's frequency response is.

A really quick fix that a lot of people do to increase mids in their marshalls would be to increase the value of the mid pot.
So increase VR3 to 50K.

Scooped? Maybe it's my computer speakers or maybe you turned it up louder in the mix... but the RM100 seems to cut through better in the mix

Either way, in the individual ones, I still prefer the K88, but the Modern module does sound pretty good!

Yeah I can't wait to mod the shit out of this thing haha. I don't know. In person it just sounds drowned out compared to the K88. The K88 isn't that mid heavy so when turning the mids down as far as I did and the mid shift off. It was a sitting bomb when it came to a mix.

forsaknazrael, I'll get you some values so you could possibly help me out later on tonight. I have to head over to prom so I'll see you guys later.

I preferred the Randall.

Although, both of them panned left and right was the best.

The Randall sounded less scooped than the Baron to me. Hard to choose which one I like best, but I think I would go with the Baron. It just sounds properly nasty (in a very good way).

Damn that sounds good....well done man.

I can see why you love them so much, I was really impressed by those clips. The boosted modern sounded really nice. Gonna defiantely pick one of those up sometime. I also understand why you let go of the 5150 and kept the Baron...the modern sounds pretty close to a 5150 and the Baron has a unique voicing so....good choice!

Oh and you sound really American! It always throws me whenever I hear people speak on UG...you never sound as British as you do in my head!

Is it BROWN-BLACK-YELLOW? I couldn't really see. Sorry, I should have specified that I wanted colors on that one, I didn't expect you to know how to read that haha.
If so, that's 100K ohms.

C14....I'm hoping it's actually 470 picofarads...47 seems weird. Does it say 471 on it? If it is honestly 47pF...Changing it to 470 will help alot.
I also recommend changing R31 to 33K.

If you do that, that's the classic Marshall tonestack. Otherwise, around 47K-56K is like Soldano's. Increasing the size kinda scoops the low end and mids.

VERY GOOD comparison video, great job! :-)

Would like to see both amps with more gain (around 6ish) if possible :-D (not using the TS9)-- I like the gain higher on the amp to see how tight/thumpy/powerful the bass response can get without the use of an OD.

Nice amp, I didn't realize how interesting the whole module concept was until now.

By the way, the KT88 w/ the tube screamer sounds great.

Haha thanks man it was really fun actually even though it was my third time . I agree though. It does sound kinda similar to a 5150 just without the crazy mids. Also I am quite American. My voice couldn't be more of the stereotypical American voice if I tried.

Really? Hmm that's weird. People have mixed feelings about what comes out better. I think the Modern is just a lot smoother and the K88 is crunchier.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

forsaknazrael I have two questions for you. Is it ok to use a higher wattage resistor with a lower rating? The R31 is 100k and I think is 1/4watt. I'm getting a bunch of stuff online but they don't have a 47k 1/4 watt, is it ok to use 1/2watt resistor where a 1/4 watt would go?

Also, you suggest a 470pf resistor in place of the 47pf? I can't seem to find any to be honest.

Potentiometer ratings.

VR2 - 1ma
VR3 - 25k
VR4 - 1ma

Is using 600v capacitors ok when the ones on the module say 630v?
