This would go so slowly in the vocals forum and the pit likes these things so it's here...

Rock has it's widely regarded virtuoso guitarists such as vai satch yngwie buckethead etc, but whoa re rock's virtuoso singers

I would say definitely Freddie Mercury for one.

Images and Words/Awake-era James Labrie. The control and power he has in his voice is incredible.

And speaking of power, Bruce Dickinson should also be included

Devin Townsend

Amazing voice and range, proper singing technique, sings everything with conviction and emotion, capable of anything from black metal screams to operatic singing to rocky belting to soft Steven Wilson-y singing.

Thom Yorke.

Tommy Rogers gets honorable mention even though the genre doesn't quite match this thread.

I know he might not exactly be a "virtuoso", but I've always thought that Brandon Flowers has an AMAZING voice.

Mr. Van Vliet didn't do drugs. Or so he says:
McGrath: You've said you don't believe in drugs. Is there any reason for that?

Beefheart: I think people should give themselves more credit. I think they have everything themselves. I don't think anything needs to be induced. Do you know what I mean?

McGrath: Yeah.

Beefheart: I think they just get disconnected.

McGrath: Can you offer any suggestions why so many people do drugs?

Beefheart: Because they want to, I guess. What I'm saying is that I just don't take them. Nobody in the group takes them.

But other members of the Magic Band seem to contradict that.

Eddie Vedder. He puts a buttload of emotion into whatever he sings.

And occaisionaly Roger Daltry. Sometimes he's great, other times he's not quite at the top of his game.

I'm not saying the because he's in one of my favorite bands, but Tommy Roger's voice really stood out in BTBAM before I got into them. ( Alaska days )

Maynard James Keenan
Mike Patton
Robert Plant

That's what I said and Primus2112 didn't agree.

Also, Black Francis has a goddamn powerful voice.

I'm gonna say Jonny Craig. He sure has a powerful voice, especially with no former vocal training.

I think rock singers are inherently not virtuosos, most rock singers sing beyond their natural range and use shoddy technique at best. Not to say I don't love the majority of the above singers, especially Eddie Vedder. But really I'd have to say only Opera and maybe Broadway singers are "real" virtuosos. Not that being a virtuoso has any sway with me one way or the other.

That's clearly a generalisation. Plenty of singers have been classically trained and use proper technique, but happen to want to sing some kind of rock music.
