they can only be used with tube amps right? so if i had a solid state amp it wouldnt do shitall?
i wouldnt say only; however they were designed for tube amps, plugging it into a SS would just have less of an effect id imagine.

They are actually made moreso for Solid State amps than tube amps actually. It will definitely help you're solid state tone a bit.
They can be used with either.
