Personaly i would start out with a guitar and an amp.

But other then that, delay and reverb are probably the mostly used fx.
Some shredders like to go nuts on a WAH like kirk hammet. Others use a taste of flanger like Chuck.
Amp:
Bugera 333
Harley Benton G412A Vintage

Guitar:
Ibanez RG321MH w/ EMG 81 & 58

Delay is great for a soloing tone, couldn't live without it (even though right now I have to since my pedal's busted, lol). A boost pedal - some players prefer a transparent, clean boost, and others use stuff like a tube screamer - is good if you're playing live and need an extra volume / EQ jump to make your solo cut through.
Gear:

Guitars: Ibanez SV5470F, Ibanez Xpt700, Fender MIM Standard Stratocaster ('04-'05), Jackson Ps-2
Ashton AG200,
Amps: ENGL E530, Bugera 6262-212,
FX: TC Electronics G-major 2, Behringer EQ700, Morley Volume / Wah

all of the above kinda depends on your amp
no use running a load of OD's Wahs and flanger/phaser into a modelling amp
(then again it should have onboard effects)
your amp is a large part of it
if you've got a lot of money then something like a JSX is pretty good
but simply it need's a lot of gain and not too scooped a voicing
