basically im looking for a guitar with similar tone to that used in rage against the machine. also i would like a guitar that has the pickup nobs and selector that can be used as a sort of killswitch, such as that on the les paul. It would also be nice if it could be used for more metal stuff as well. i don't know much about guitars or models of guitars so i was hoping someone could help? hoping to spend less than £1000 and obviously the cheaper the better

if you're looking for tone that is used in rage against the machine, you're going to have an amp to dial the settings. try looking at les pauls

ESP Eclipse II (or) Fender Strat w/David Gilmour EMGs > Cry Baby Original > Digitech RP250 > JOYO Ultimate Overdrive > MXR BLS Chorus > MXR Phase 90 > EHX Memory Toy > 1981 Marshall JCM800
If your willing to build a guitar, I know Tom Morello's "Arm the Homeless" has the following:
Stratocaster Body
Some kind of Ibanez Edge Tremolo system
Dual EMG 81 Humbuckers
and an Explorer headstock.
there pretty much all the features of the guitar.
Deco S. Boss

Squier Telecaster Standard Series
Jackson RX10D Rhoads V

Randall RG15XM

Ashton DS30
Daphon Wah-Wah
KORG ToneWorks AX3G Multi Effects Pedal
Tom Morrello has got quite a few guitars, he's got a Telecaster, a Gibson ES and a Kramer strat style one I think. You wouldn't get his sound with any specific guitar, but check out this video, it might help.

Part 1

Part 2

He talks about his guitars and his effects, mabye this will help you out
