I didn't see anything for vocals, so I'm gonna post this here in The Pit.

Pretty noob question, I figure. I'm wanting to record some vocals, and I wanna do some slight editing on them. I figure it's the mics, but anyway I can get that artificially?

Examples:

The Strokes - Reptilia

Jack White - Fly Farm Blues

You could try making the recording clip and distort on purpose. Play about with the EQ, take out a lot of the low frequencies. Play about with any effects you have.

Jack White uses a Green Bullet Mic (for harmonicas I think) to get that sound. It's distortion on vocals basically.

Compression and light overdrive.

Why don't you try using those things called eyes? I heard they can help you find something when you use them properly.
