Hey guys, I need some help. I've been trying to get in a committed, serious band for 2 years. I've failed every attempt because the others all just decided to quit (it sounds douchey but that's what happened.) Anyway, I'm having trouble finding musicians and I'm running out of patience. My craigslist ad has gotten no hits and the only other teenager in in my area posted this.

HELP.

Trust me, they do. I've had the misfortune of meeting several of them.

''Mainly so i can hook up with girls.''

I think that's the wrong reason to start a band
Anyway I would look at school if there are people who like to play music and if you have a guitarteacher ask him, thats how I got most of my band members.

School: I'm the only metalhead who isn't in a band
Teacher: Don't have one

This is probably where you are going wrong. If you limit yourself to just playing one style, you're making it that much harder for yourself to find members. Try saying "Guitarist looking for band" rather than "Guitarist looking for metal band."

You may not be playing exactly the music that you love, but you'll be playing music, and it's up you to decide which is more important to you.

+1.

I'm into metal. Put an ad up saying "Bassist looking for rock/metal band in X area" and got 4 replies in 2 days and one off my current band.

Don't limit what you want to play. Get in a band playing something that might not be right up your street and meet other mucians through that.
Alternativley you can go to local unsigned gigs and just mingle with other musicians

Well at least the guy in the ad is honest about what he wants

I agree with the above, expand the genres that you're open to. Not only will you get some more experience, but you may meet other metal guys along the way. I'm also under the impression that the metal scene is extremely competitive when entering a band and getting gigs, due to the sheer number of them around now.
And no, Guitar Hero will not help. Even on expert. Really.

I think Puppet_616's got the right idea with going to local shows. I recently started a band, and we were having trouble finding a drummer. Me and our singer (I like to think of us as the executive committee of the band) just kinda threw ourselves into the local music scene. Going to shows, meeting people, stuff like that. Now the drummers are appearing out of the woodwork!

Just for clarification - here's the ad I've got up right now.

I'm a 16 year old guitarist with 4 years of experience looking to play hard rock and/or metal. My influences include early Metallica, Iron Maiden, System of a Down, Rise Against, The Foo Fighters, and Led Zeppelin. I'm serious about music and willing to commit to practicing for several hours a weekend. I can send you some recordings of my playing if you want them and I'm able to write songs pretty efficiently. I also have some experience on bass and can handle most basslines. I'm mostly looking to work with people between the ages of 15 and 17.

Nobody is answering yet because it's an add for "metal guitarist available". It's probably the most common add around. You probably have a better chance to make the metal band, like "looking for second guitarist, drums, bass and vox for new metal band". It pretty much has the same effect, but people are more willing to join something like that.

Or you can expand your genres.

9/10 times my craigslist musician finding always ends stale...most of the people who respond to my ads didnt accually read the ad, they just saw "lead/rhythm Guitarist" and magically assumed i was looking to play an elvis tribute band lol....influences listed were always Rush, Floyd, Concrete Blonde, 90s grunge...and i get elvis tribute band?

usually i end up just trying to build a group from the ground up but its hard to find dedicated people, most want an easy trip into a band without much work...or they just want to do a cover band.

Among teenagers, that's the most common reason to start a band.

Advice to the OP: consider playing with older musicians as well.

Oh wow sorry about that post. Some people are just mean- and they think because they are behind a computer they can insult whoever they want. I doubt they would say that to your face! I found 2 of my bandmates via craigslist, and luckily they are awesome people and musicians- but we went through many MANY other musicians before we found the right ones. Persistence can pay off. It might not happen immediately.

+1 now i dont think ya should hook up with people old enough to be your grandfather(too much generation gap) but at least expand some.

for example...im 32...so many bands playing my style toss in a cutt off of no one over 25?? damn 32 aint olde! sure i grew up in the 80s and had micheal jackson pants but im not old!
