Often times I notice that a plain 3rd string has a lame sound to it on a lot of chords. Is it a good idea for rhythm guitar players to have a wounded 3rd string?

Depends what you mean by 'lame' sound. The main reason people get wound G-strings is because they stay in tune better than plain g strings.
