when i go to record 1 of the guitar tracks for quad tracking do i record in mono or stereo?Or does it make a difference?
guitar is a mono instrument. unless you are using multiple mics, you are recording it in mono. so you record in mono, and then pan.
If it's from only 1 mic then do it mono, uses less RAM that way.
mono, stereo guitar is usually pretty boring unless you have a stereo amplifier and cab or connect two cabs together.

Also, when you start layering, if its distorted guitar you should turn down the distortion while you layer. It will make it alot more articulate but the final product will still be plenty distorted.

This goes for reverbs too, you dont want 4 layers of the same reverb on the guitars, it can build up and sound really washy if you aren't careful.
