I call mine piece of crap. Because it's a piece of crap. What? Respect your instrument? It don't respect me! Always going out of tune and stuff...

I play an Epiphone Les Paul and an Ibanez RG350. I've named the-

Les Paul - Angerdoll (Welsh for "Passion")
RG350 - Collfarn (Welsh for "Warfare")

*shrugs* I'm Welsh, and I like Steve Vai. I thought the Les Paul would be the more passionate and the RG more appropriate for "Warfare"

I call some by name if a name really struck me at the time, but i don't name them for the sake of naming them. Most of my guitars I refer to simply as "the Strat", "the LTD", etc, either brand or model name.
Yes, I know everything. No, I can't play worth a damn.

I call 'em by their name. But it becomes THEIR name. Mainly my Schecter. I could own a hundred Schecters, but my C-1 + is always going to be "The Schecter."

The other guy in my band named his 6-string guitar Vivian, his 7-string Doopliss, and his 6-string bass Goombella. He's in love with Paper Mario

I never thought of naming guitars, but after all the shit my Gibson (my first guitar) has gone through, I named it Memory. I've written about 80% of my songs on it, and 99% of the songs that I wrote for other people were written and recorded using that guitar. I've beat it to hell. I've burnt it with a soldering iron. I've even deliberately carved dates into it. I've put my heart and my soul into that guitar, and I thought it deserved the name. I doubt I will ever name a guitar again, but Memory is special to me.

naming guitars =

i've never named my guitars. what's the point? i'm actually asking this out of all seriousness, it's not a rhetorical question, i actually want to know what motivates people to name a guitar.
I like analogue Solid State amps that make no effort to be "tube-like", and I'm proud of it...

I've never seen one once, ever.

I called my Angus Young Sig Gibby SG "Rosie" because of "Whole Lotta Rosie".

/unoriginality

Editpocalypse: To the guy above me, naming guitars is likely due to the more personal connection people have with their guitars over, say, their staplers. Its the same with things like boats. Giving a guitar a name gives the impression that it is more an equal than it is a tool.

My Strat is called Betty. I think my mate named it though and I liked it. I've not named any of my other current guitars. My old Epi LP was called Rosa, and my old strat was called Carmen.

And as for naming guitars, if it's good enough for SRV, it's good enough for me.

As for motivations for naming guitars, I would imagine it may be one or more of the following:

•*Gives a more personal connection with your instrument. It makes it more than just any other guitar. If you found a lost dog and looked after it until it was picked up, you'd give it a name. When the owner came and said it had a different name, you'd still identify that dog as what you originally called it. It's a psychological attachment. The name represents your interpretation of what the guitar is like as well. (quite hard to explain)

•*If you have a number of similar guitars (like SRV) it makes it quicker to refer to them if names catch on.

•*It's a more original way of referring to them than their brand/type/finish.

• We spend hours plucking and twanging away on these instruments. It might be a bit weird but we personify them/describe their personalities using language reserved for personhood. Thus it seems apt to name them. It's like when saying about a car "Isn't she a beauty".

•*Because we're a bit weird.

•*A guitar requires lots of care, attention, be treated right, to be looked after etc. It's only natural to relate that to a woman/girlfriend, so giving it a girls name is natural.

• Finally *sigh* what my dad said to me in the store when I got my first guitar. Typing it on here makes me cringe. "Son, a guitar is like a woman. Get your fingers in the right place and she'll make all the right noises. Heyo!". I nearly died of embarrassment.

+1 I name my "smoking accessories", but not my guitars. Only got three, so it's not hard to keep up with them, but the wife might be worried if I named one a chick's name...
