Don't bother with the Gibson SG just yet, get rid of the Marshall MG first. Your Epiphone is decent enough.

If you're spending $1200 on a new Gibson SG, you can get a Peavey 6505+ or something within your budget. Almost every 'metal' band out there is using or has used the 6505 at one point in their career.

MG can't get enough gain for those styles.


You'll need a new amp or a REALLY good distortion pedal, which would probably cost you as much as a new amp.


I agree with Raijouta, but get the real deal US made 6505, and then put EMGs in you're SG for the time being.
