I've been living in Taiwan for about three years. In Taiwan, everyone speaks chines but its not simplified, like in China. Anyways, my speaking is pretty good but my writing is terrible. The reason being, every word has its own special character. Who the !@&$ thought of that!
In spite of it being absolutely ridiculous, I'm determined to master it. I'm starting to go to a university tomorrow to study chinese. It'll be tough because I'm balancing my reguler school as well (I'm 14) but I'm homeschooled, so my schedule is very flexible.
Anyone else studying chinese?

She's probably learning Chinese, while playing the flute and the drums right now.

Jackal58: But they learn it when they're two.

Try reading this. 這是中文. 中文的字好難寫, 因為每一个字有很多筆畫. 中文也有四個音調.
translation: this is chinese. chinese is very hard to write, because each word is a different character. chinese also has four tones in it.

The Chinese mainly speak mandarin, thats what I'm learning, and Cantonese. The character, however, are the same.

That's why I wait for them to learn English.
There are a half dozen or so UGers that I'm aware of from Taiwan or Hong Kong. You'll see them here and there.

Okay I have a friend who is meant to know Cantonese because of his family and he's had lessons, but he doesn't seem to be very good at it. I was gonna have a crack at learning Japanese at one point, are the Kanji characters the same as Chinese characters?

The Chinese characters and Japanese characters are the same. They just have different meanings.
