Though this may come naturally to some people, I have a hard time deciding what fingers to use when playing solos. I feel like I'm slowing myself down by not using the best possible finger for a specific note.

An example of part of a solo I'd like you guys to look at:

|------8------8------8------8------8---|-8h10p8------8------8------8-8\-0-0-|
|-8h10---8h10---8h10---8h10---8h10-----|--------8h10---8h10---8h10---8\-----|
|--------------------------------------|------------------------------------|
|--------------------------------------|------------------------------------|
|--------------------------------------|------------------------------------|
|--------------------------------------|------------------------------------|
What fingers would you guys use for the hammer-ons? What about the 8th fret of the e string?

While this is only one quick example I found to illustrate my point, my question is, what tips can you offer for determining the most effective finger positions when playing solos? One useful piece of advice I've received is to not hesitate to barre a certain fret and use your other three fingers to quickly hammer-on to other notes.

Thanks in advance, hope I'm being clear.

for that id just use my index to barre the 8 and use ring finger for the hammer ons
i just have my fingers so that i have to move as little as possible
usually in sets of four fingers index for the lowers fret and a few lower than that and each finger has the next fret according to where its closer to and pinkie to reach slightlty farther up until i have to move my whole hand

I go with the most comfortable fingering to me, which is to use your index to bar the 8th and the ring finger to hammer-on the 10th.

Thanks for the help so far. This isn't really a solo but note that it is played rather quickly. Any advice regarding ideal finger position would be great:

-------------------------------------------------------------
-------7h9--7--7------7--6---6--6--6h7--6---------7h9--7--7--
--8--8-----------6---------8--------------8--8--8------------
-------------------8-----------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------
I was thinking maybe I should barre the sixth fret all of the way through?

for this and any other type of lick, play through it as slow as possible and figure out what is comfortable when playing at that speed, then take that fingering and use it for all speeds.
