Professor Lewis and his team at the University of Wyoming have successfully implanted the silk-making genes from a golden orb spider into a herd of goats and are now, finally, producing one of nature's strongest products in usable quantities.

I imagine we'll have crime fighting goats quite soon.
Shooting milk-webs outta their teats and whatnot.

Yes, i searchbarred and found nothing.

Discuss!

I'm all for it....just as long as the mask/costume is flaterring for the goat.

But seriiously, this could mean a lot of cool developments. Fibre is the *word for something important* of a good civilization.

interesting find! i would like to see them replace a bone with this stuff.

Never seen that article before and it's a month old. You'd think any of the 20 science RSS feeds would report it

Plus it's on a hare krishna website which isn't helping its credibility.

I dunno....google gives me results.
It has quite a few sources.

Plus, its somewhat feasible, so there's no real reason to doubt its credibility. Genetics has come a long way..
Meh....it seemed interesting enough.

Does "cold fusion" ring a bell?

I'm a bit skeptical here. But if it's true, awesome.

I can't find any credible sources and google news doesn't return any results

Cool if it's true, but I really doubt it is.

Biodegradable and non-toxic ftw!!

This could well be a breakthrough if it's true!

"Those were hooked up to our spider silk genes."

After the milk is collected, it's taken back to a laboratory where the silk protein is filtered out. It solidifies when exposed to air and is wound onto a roller.

Prof Lewis said the team collects about four meters of silk for every four drops of protein they gather.

Video I found from youtube. Apparently to get the stuff they actually milk the goats and what comes out is the liquid they use to make the silk. I mean wtf? This can't be real.

Google also showed me a BBC news article on the subject from 10 years ago
.

Check the university of Wyoming website. They've got it there (found it through google). Not sure if the actual research is any good (since as you said, it doesn't seem to appear in any peer-reviewed stuff), but it did happen.

http://www.uwyo.edu/news/webclips/showrelease.asp?webclipid=3521

As for the ten year old article, just read the damn thing, it's not at all about the same thing. That was a canadian biotech company claiming to have done that, though they apparently used the web genes found by researchers from the University of Wyoming (same place the new article is from).

I find it perfectly plausible that the company was making claims before they were realized, and that they never actually got anywhere, because of it not being cost-effective or whatnot, and that the researchers who gave them the genes have now gotten it working properly.

I said the article from the australian news site was the same article, not the BBC one.

I reckon it's only a matter of time before some kind of animal rights group starts protesting over this. It's been pretty quiet in the news though, so hopefully they won't notice.
