I'm looking to buy a new interface because the one I have only has two inputs and horrible pre amps. I was originally looking at the m-audio fast track 8r but I then learned that there might be latency issues when using more than a couple inputs. So I kept reading and learned that firewire interfaces are superior at handling the latency issue. (I'm not sure this is even true.) Even though I know there are ways around it a few of the computers I have don't even have firewire so I'd have to have good reason to buy a firewire interface.

I just need something with at least 8 inputs and reeeally nice, powerful sounding pre amps. My price range is pretty high but not ridiculous.. preferably around $500... +- $200 if really necessary. I was actually just looking at the interface from presonus

Does anyone have any advice on what to look for? Most importantly I need to know why something is better than something else.

Anyway, thanks a lot!

PreSonus has the Firestudio Project which offers some good preamps and 8 inputs on board. I have the older FP10 and it's not bad...sound is great but the drivers are buggy on my system.

I've heard good things about the FTU 8R...but have never used it myself so I can't give ya any input on that specific product.

It should be noted that if you are looking for the highest quality sound, you won't get it even with the Firestudio Project. All single preamps around the $300-400 price range sound just about the same. If you really want some great sound, you're going to have to pay up for external preamps and possible ADA converters.

As for Firewire vs USB. Firewire is a little slower than USB2 however you can send more data at once down a firewire cable and that's why you see more larger interfaces with this type of connection.

Overall I'm a huge fan of M-Audio gear but that's just me...

Just a few interfaces I would look into and compare:
PreSonus Firestudio Project
M-Audio ProFire 2626
MOTU 8pre 16x12
