So I got a new 12 string and have already snapped the g string, which I was warned would happen...

I've read in some places that you should replace it with a .009 instead of a .010 to reduce the tension, is that a good idea?

I think he is referring to the octave G string.. I would buy at least 2 or so extra G octave strings if you can find them for sale individually, that way you are set. I carry two extra sets with me in the case at all times. You never know when it might break and what could break.
