Just because they are the same Brand doesn't mean they are matched. He'll probably be fine but I personally would not risk it.

Like 311 said, they have to be matched. It doesn't matter if they say Mesa on them or not.

Mesa Boogie tubes are just rebadged Grooves

Is that true?
"In modern music, a lot of people are really stuck on the example, asif it were the idea. It takes millions of examples to articulate an idea, so don't get stuck on the f*cking example." - Joshua Homme, 2008.

Yes, but they're matched specifically to Mesa amps as well.

OP, I wouldn't do it. Look into some other brands; check out The Tube Store and Doug's Tubes.

I can't imagine it being too much of a risk. What could possibly go wrong?

but they are both 6L6. doesn't that mean something?

yes it means something but that is just the beginning often times.

if the amp had a bias adjust mod you could take these tubes on probably

but because it is cathode biased (I think) or non-adjustable fixed bias and biased cold out of the factory you need 4 tubes (qaud) that all come from the same place and were matched up for a 5150 when they leave the shop.

send doug at dougstubes an email (or any of the other online places) and do it right - keep the others you have as spares. Again, they might work fine and they may not. If they burn up they could take other amp components (screen grid resistors for example) with them and then you have bigger problems.

PS: Never owned a 5150 nor worked on one so....

just buy a matched quad. 4 - 6l6s from l&m. please
I wondered why the frisbee was getting bigger, then it hit me.

Probably because they don't want you to potentially damage a wonderful piece of kit.

The fact that unless the tubes are a matched quad then your amp will be drawing a different amount of current from each tube which will really **** up your transformers.

It will be fine. The model numbers don't mean anything.
