This may be a no no from the mods in this forum but it seems the most apt place to put this. I was just thinking a thread where you place lyrics from songs that you really like and that inspires you to write more lyrics. I think it would an interesting way to see where peoples style of writing comes from.

A song that I'm really hooked on at the moment is:

John Martyn - John The Baptist

I'm John the Baptist
And this is my friend Salome
And you can bet it's my head she wants
And not my heart only
If you see me smiling
And you wonder why
You can bet it's a private joke
Between her and I.

And it's alright
Everything is alright
Alright
Everything is alright.

She dances for me
In the midnight moon
And when I play for her
She never sings too soon
When my head's cut off
And I'm lying on a plate
I'm going to grin and tell myself
It's been a lovely wait.

And it's alright
Everything is alright
Alright
Everything's alright.

With the revelation started
And my face just lightly haunted
I see myself on the nursery wall
On the poster reading wanted
And there's a big reward
For bringing me in
And I know in my very heart
I committed no sin.

And it's alright
Everything is alright
Alright
Everything is alright.

I'm John the Baptist
And this is my friend Salome
And you can bet it's my head she wants
And not my heart only
If you see me smiling
And you wonder why
You can bet it's a private joke
Between her and I.

And it's alright
Everything is alright
Alright
Everything is alright
Everything's alright
Everything's alright.

John Martyn is probably my biggest inspirations in my music and lyrics. What are yours?

Thom Yorke is my favourite lyricist atm

Yeah man I really love his lyrics. One of my favorites is definitely No Suprises:

A heart that's full up like a landfill,
a job that slowly kills you,
bruises that won't heal.
You look so tired-unhappy,
bring down the government,
they don't, they don't speak for us.
I'll take a quiet life,
a handshake of carbon monoxide,

with no alarms and no surprises,
no alarms and no surprises,
no alarms and no surprises,
Silence, silence.

This is my final fit,
my final bellyache

with no alarms and no surprises,
no alarms and no surprises,
no alarms and no surprises please.

Such a pretty house
and such a pretty garden.

No alarms and no surprises (get me outta here),
no alarms and no surprises (get me outta here),
no alarms and no surprises, please.

Kinda depressing but a really good song. The videos also awesome which is always a bonus.

@ultrasonic: Yeah I love Thom Yorke's lyrics. Karma Police was the first of their songs I really listened to and the lyrics still somehow inspire me.

No matter how much of a pratt you think he is, it has to be said the Pete Doherty is a seriously good lyricist.

Eminem is the only rapper I listen to because he's lyrically brilliant.

Mike Skinner of The Streets is another inspiration of mine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFLdIGNUKuw One of my favourite songs.

Alex Turner from Arctic Monkeys.

Leonard Cohen is a great.

Morrissey another.

Thats a few of my lyrical inspirations.

^^^^ I Agree about Pete Doherty.

Minus the media, drugs and skanky appearance he's a genius

And My Favourite Thom Yorke Lyrics are from 'Let Down' (Surprisingly optimistic and about getting back up after being knocked down)

EDIT: ^^^ I Also agree about Morissey

Robert Frost - Sound of the Trees

I wonder about the trees.
Why do we wish to bear
Forever the noise of these
More than another noise
So close to our dwelling place?
We suffer them by the day
Till we lose all measure of pace,
And fixity in our joys,
And acquire a listening air.
They are that that talks of going
But never gets away;
And that talks no less for knowing,
As it grows wiser and older,
That now it means to stay.
My feet tug at the floor
And my head sways to my shoulder
Sometimes when I watch trees sway,
From the window or the door.
I shall set forth for somewhere,
I shall make the reckless choice
Some day when they are in voice
And tossing so as to scare
The white clouds over them on.
I shall have less to say,
But I shall be gone.

Black Keys - The Lengths

Tell me where you're goin',
What is goin' wrong,
I felt you leavin',
Before you'd even gone,
Hold me now,
Or never, ever,
Hold me again,
No more talk,
Could take me from this,
Pain I'm in,
Pain I'm in,

See the moonlight shinin',
On your window pane,
See it leave you,
As faithful as it came,
Please yourself,
So you don't have to,
Be afraid,
Make amends,
Or carry on another way,
Another way,
Oh~oh,

Tell me what you were thinkin',
To treat somebody so,
The care he took,
The lengths to which he'd go,
The coals are hot,
To walk across,
Without your shoes,
But in the end,
Know that you've got nothing to lose,
Nothin' to lose,

I generally like abstract lyrics. They seem to resonate more meaning than if they're direct and blunt, partly because I like to think about the emotions behind a song, and partly because I can find more than one meaning within.

Humanoid-Chevelle:
I paid you, squeaky wheel
Go try healing this too
That said, you're full of it
On a bend, beg to fail
Properly holding your grudge
That said, you're full of shit.

Try accepting this
Why not face today
Forever one to crawl out
Fade out next to lazy
End it all within

Why not face today
Forever one to crawl out
Fade out next to lazy
End it all within

Last burned, well grab a pen
For the fourth and unknown
Hated work, but loved the scene
The somber came, juxtaposed
All the subtleness of
A downed plane retreat again

Try accepting this
Why not face today
Forever one to crawl out
Fade out next to lazy
End it all within

Why not face today
Forever one to crawl out
Fade out next to lazy
End it all within

If only the crying could heal
I'd sell my left arm to buy passion
If only apologies worked
Well I could find some reasons
Why maybe you wouldn't be
So ill, so, ill, sorry your souls
so ****ing shallow
it's creeping outside, outside of its hole
it's trying to see, say it
fake this reality

Why not face today
Forever one to crawl out
Fade out next to lazy
End it all within

Why not face today
Forever one to crawl out
Fade out next to lazy
End it all within
