I just started playing guitar about a month and a half ago, and I am having a little trouble picking out strumming patterns for certain songs.

For example: Red Car Wire - Affinity
(youtube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHiSDMrIAr4)

I can hear some of it but then others it falls behind the lyrics and I can't pick it up.

Is there any tips some experienced guitarists have for picking up strumming patterns?

Just listen as closely as possible, eventually your brain will tune out the vocals.

Yeah I agree. Also you need to concentrate on the rhythm of the song, because the way they play the guitar creates the basis of that flow. Have a go yourself to pin point the pattern, but if you want a cop out shortcut - its the same pattern throughout the whole song varying only at 0:39 at what would be a bridge.
