Picked up a supposedly old USA Strat the other day, for what may have been a massive bargain or a con. It's got "made in USA" stamped on the neck just before it meets the body and underneath the logo on the headstock as normal, however there's no marking on the tuners as far as I can see and I'm not sure whether its genuine or not.

I looked up the serial number on several websites and they all point to 1976, however there's no Big "F" stamped on the neckplate underneath this serial, so again I'm unsure.

Anyone able to confirm its authenticity?

Sorry for the large number of images, but its the best way of showing everything.

Plays nicely, cost £200, apparently a late grandads guitar or something. The guy I bought it from didnt really seem to know much about guitars

i don't think you should be too bothered then, if anyone asks about it just be like "yeah apparently it's a 70's model, not sure tho"

it looks pretty fake to me, but at the same time, it doesn't look like it's a bad guitar - it has some strange quirks that lead me to believe that perhaps somebody built it themselves as a personal project or something, as opposed to it being one of those hideous sweatshop fakes you get on those chinese websites.

That being said i've seen some pretty fake looking USA strats from the 1980s.. perhaps it's an '86 or something
I like analogue Solid State amps that make no effort to be "tube-like", and I'm proud of it...

...A little too proud, to be honest.

For all you know the person you got it from has been told for x amount of years it was a real Fender and didn't know any better. If it was only 200 pounds and plays good then no worries.
