So I had to kill 30 minutes while waiting for one of my favorite restaurants to open up for dinner, and thus I wandered into Guitar Center. So I'm walking around and browsing random stuff, when I see an old 1996 Ibanez RX series loungin' around. In absolutely outstanding condition for a guitar thats 14 years old. It's basically a middle-end model of the guitar my fave guitarist, Andy Timmons plays. I tried it, and WOW what a player. All in all, I had to have it. The best part was the price. Walked outa there with this baby for a cool $150. It was just a case of "its mean to be" and for the price I couldnt turn it down. Pic

REVIEW:

The neck is BUTTER and the fretwork is the best I've ever seen on a sub-1000 dollar guitar. The bridge pickup is awesome, the neck and middle single coils are a tad weak so I'll probably swap em, but the guitar is fantastic. Tuners are holding up great. I was gonna swap them for locking sperzels but now I'll just wait and see. The bridge is great too. Love it!!

Looks very incredible. A good catch, since I really like Andy's signature model, it's just expensive as hell.

Thanks man. I've played Andy's signature model (in fact Andy's played mine too, as I had him throw out a lick on one of my custom guitars hehe)...and its def. an awesome guitar. But honestly, if you drop a Cruiser/Cruiser/AT Dimarzio set into this guitar and add locking sperzels (all of which I will probably do soon), you wouldn't really be able to tell the difference aside from the rosewood FB versus maple on Andy's. IMO the neck on this guitar alone is worth the price I paid. Absolutely impeccable fretwork. And I discovered some NICE flame on the back of the neck which I'm trying to photograph now but my camera is garbage :*(.

i think white would be really cool. i love the look of white pickups in a white pickguard, and if that pickguard is slightly aged (which i would think it would be after 14 years) then even better! white on parchment-color pickguards is awesome i think

Thanks guys! Here's an update...I browsed GC online and found that the store had the hardshell case for this thing too, in near perfect shape...for get this, $15. So I drove on over and picked it up. Here are a few more pics of it in it's new home:

Well, $165 if you wanna count the 15 bucks for the hardshell case. . Definitely a great score, I'm very pleased with it. The case is the original I believe, but in near perfect shape despite the age.

Ok, so the bridge is gonna stay for sure. Tuners I'm gonna upgrade to the usual locking sperzels I have on all my other guitars, and pickups will go the Andy Timmons route - Cruiser/Cruiser/AT.

Honestly, I bought a $2200 Carvin from Guitar Center once for $399 with the tweed hardshell case and later swapped it for my Mesa. I've gotten $700 Schecters for $150, a $1500 USA Jackson for $400...if you're willin' to look, insane deals are out there.

especially at stores that take in trades. they purposely price them low so they leave sooner than later.

i scan clist a couple times a day and look for the "amp and guitar" listings. the usual snipers don't click on those or i just beat them to it often enough for me. usually the listings are squier packs but occasionally you find a 5e3 clone for $250.

I did want to mention, as I don't really keep up with Andy's latest gear and all, but in an interview I saw on youtube, he doesn't use the AT in the bridge. Granted, he uses the prototype model, and not the released signature (At least in the video(s) I've seen with him talking about his gear he uses the prototype) and actually uses a seymour duncan JB in the bridge I think it was or something.

Not to dissuade you on the AT pickup, I've heard great things from it and would most likely put it on a superstrat if I ever got one of my own .

Nice guitar for $150, I would've paid so much more than that. The neck looks beautiful too .

HNGD!

Here's the interview I was talking about by the way:

EDIT:
I have read now that the AT-1 apparently is like a smoother JB.

Usually they just have no idea what they have and can't be bothered to check. I mean, I know that Carvins have low resale value, but they couldve EASILY sold the one that I snagged for $1000-$1200. It was the absolute top of the line maxed out model.

Thanks dude, I do know all about this but I believe currently he does use the AT1 pickup. He experimented with a bunch of different ones and the AT1 is his signature pickup, its everything the JB is and more.

Here's a post from the Duncan forum, this sounds pretty right to me:

"Andy had his JB tweaked though. So it didn't sound like any JB that you can buy. The JB died on him after so many years of being punished. The AT1 from Dimarzio is already wound to sound like it. I have the AT1 and it is oozing with Andy's lead tone. I bought a JB before to try and get Andy's tone and it sounded nothing like his. I even played it at his masterclass. He played through the same amp I played through and his was very thick. Mine was sharp and sounded a lot like a Tele."

Update: scored the first of the 3 pickups that i need, brand new. The good deals keep on coming, got it for $50 brand new and sealed. Normally goes for $70. Now I gotta get another one of em, and the Andy Timmons signature humbucker, and I'll be in business .
