SO I was listening to satellite radio and a song turned up.

It was a girl covering a song.

I forgot the song.

Anyways, it was a song directed at a girl.

The song lyrics weren't changed at all.

This got me a little bit turned on...

Does the gender matter when a person of the other gender sings a cover song?

Like a guy writes a love song about a girl.

Some girl covers the song but doesn't change the lyrics.

Or do you just see it as "Hey, they're just singing a song".

Attack Attack! covered that song....and didnt change that lyric. Needless to say, I was confused.

I don't see the confusion here
OT: IT can be odd if the lyrics are like, A girl having sex with a guy, then a guy sings it and doesn't change the lyrics

One band I was in had a (really HOT) female vocalist. We covered "Lips of an Angel." It was very bi-curious sounding.

Um...what the hell are you talking about...I'm pretty sure Evanescence has never covered a Nirvana song unless they've done it live...
EDIT: If you're talking about Lithium, it's nowhere near the same song as Nirvana's

I once sang Rush's Nobody's Hero infront of 300 or so people.

This wouldn't be too unusual except the first verse goes like this:

I knew he was different in his sexuality
I went to his parties as a straight minority
Never seemed a threat to my masculinity

I'm female so the last line sounds odd...

Was gonna mention that. Yeah, I mean if you know it's a cover then it's fine but if you've never heard the original then you're gonna be confused as ****. Although the voice must fit the song, I once heard a girl covering 'Teenage Wasteland' and it sounded like shit, so some songs just really can't be covered by the opposite sex.

I do "Stop! In The Name of Love" by Diana Ross but appropriately change the lover to be a female instead of male

People sing songs about accidentally shooting people and going into space and all sorts of stuff they don't actually do. Singing a song is playing a character and narrating your story to an audience. My band used to do a few songs written from a female perspective, and I would sing them without altering the lyrics.

It usually sounds clunky when you do change them, take for example Sweet Child O Mine by Sheryl Crow. "He's got a smile that, it seems to me/reminds me of childhood memories" just sounds wrong.

That one band that covered misery business. I don't remember the band though. It comes to mind since the lyrics weren't changed.

Why would you change the lyrics to SCoM?

Sometimes, changing the lyrics wouldn't work at all but would still sound weird.

I mean, imagine a guy singing "If I was a boy".

It was creepy though, because I used to sing it in a scary voice.

I don't change it when I cover songs. Happens to me a lot to, most of the songs I do were originally done by women.

edit: Thinking of You by Katy Perry is a good example.

I assume they did it as a tribute to Nirvana and are presumably fans of them, probably better fans than you since they aren't putting them on a fucking pedastal and treating them like rock gods. I'm pretty sure Kurt Cobain hated that and since you are doing that he would hate you too and probably like Evanascene for performing an, honestly, decent, cover of one of his songs out of affection rather than see them as untouchable relics of early 90s angsty music.
