Sorry if this sounds stupid to people but i'd really like to know the numbers on this one, so try to be honest on the poll I'm putting up in a second.

The Question: Given that the statement "life is pointless, and you are tiny in the universe" is true, do you find that statement uplifting or depressing?

Depression is not something that can be felt through one sentence.
#6
I'm terrified/in awe of the idea. Mostly at the same time.

Edit:
It doesn't really move me "up" or "down". If anything, it frees you to move laterally, if that makes sense. You don't have to like it or hate it, but accepting it sort of lets you, or me, at least, able to accept life for what it is, and get on with it in a way that somehow feels more free than from before you accepted it. That's just me though, of course.

Well I want to fulfill some sort of purpose in the world, whether tiny or huge, so it's certainly not very uplifting.

I feel indifferent to it. You can have those 'oh my God I'm gonna die one day OMG' moments, decide to live your life as if you were going to die tomorrow, but tomorrow evening you're going to be eating mac and cheese and watching The Simpsons as always.

However, I can see why it depresses some people.
#13
It's a depressing thought, but I just forget about it and continue with life.

I do find it a bit depressing - not the fact I'm tiny in the universe, but that people say life is pointless. I find that a miserable belief.

Those are two seperate statements.

life is pointless
Life is what you make of it.

you are tiny in the universe
And? So what...

The poll choices are Uplifting or Depressing, I stated it was realistic.

I don't like the saying and I don't dislike it, it's just another one of those questions that can never be given a rational explanation so each person interprets it differently. It's just another one of those statements aimed at making you think about the meaning of life on a deeper level.

This. I'm cool with the universe being huge and me not being that big; it's true. But, to say that life is pointless, not only do I disagree, but I find it a pessimistic thing to believe.

I find believing in that makes me unbelievably optimistic, though.

Not really. You're always going to just be, so just be. You were having fun before you decide to think in a larger baring sense - go back to thinking as you.

It's an objective point of view. I find the belief of the need of an afterlife in order for life to have a meaning to be absolutely miserable.

So... while we're at it, what is the point of life then? Or if you can't answer that, what makes you believe there is a point to it, somewhere, other than whatever points we choose to make up because we're conditioned/genetically programmed to?

I felt free after learning about Existentialism and one day realized that I really was very insignificant in the grand scheme of the Universe... A weight came off my shoulders and I realized I could just live my life without having to worry about the "grand scheme" and live for those tiny moments of sheer joy that come along every so often... like in the middle of a favorite solo that you are killing for example. Anywho I'm gonna go listen to some Modest Mouse and let Issac think of these things for me LOL

depressing. I've found life pretty pointless. Like, you live to make a difference in other's lives. But those people will soon die too. You live for future generations too, but they will soon die as well. You can live for the planet, but the planet will soon be destroyed. No one even knows if the universe is infinite or not for sure, but recent finding suggest it is curved and therefore has an expanding boundary.

The world is meaningless, there is no God or gods, there are no morals, the universe is not moving inexorably towards any higher purpose. All meaning is man-made, so make your own, and make it well. Do not treat life as a way to pass the time until you die.
Do not try to "find yourself"; you must make yourself.
Choose what you want to find meaningful and live, create, love, hate, cry, destroy, fight and die for it. Do not let your life and your values and you actions slip easily into any mold, other that that which you create for yourself, and say with conviction, "This is who I make myself".
Do not give in to hope. Remember that nothing you do has any significance beyond that with which imbue it.
Whatever you do, do it for its own sake. Rembember that to fight meaninglessness is futile, but fight anyway, in spite of and because of its futility.
The world may be empty of meaning, but it is a blank canvas on which to paint meanings of your own. Live deliberately. You are free.

I find meaninglessness uplifting, as you can see ^

I don't like that statement at all. First off:

"Life is pointless." - Only if one wants it to be. I can give my life meaning, goals, etc. if I want to.

"And you are tiny in the universe." - I really don't see any reason why our size should a.) make us feel meaningless and b.) make us feel depressed.

Seeing how I don't believe in depression, it's not that, it's actually rather amusing to me.

First of all, "You are tiny in the Universe",

And..?

I don't see the point, of course I'm tiny, but I see my life as something much more eventful than a planet in some unknown galaxy blowing up or anything of the sort.

"Life is pointless," Seeing how life is what you make of it, it can be either pointless and empty, or completely have a point and be fulfilling.

Of course, this is simply my interpretation of those statements, and it'd vary with everyone.

That's uplifting, I think. When I think about that, it makes me feel large. When you think about it, we are in the Universe, and the Universe is in us. We are make of star stuff.

Edit: This has to be one of the most even polls I've seen on here. Nearly a three way tie currently.
