If a stranger who has never heard rock music asked you to show him 5 songs to represent the entire genre what would you choose?

I've not answered because I haven't figured it out yet.

Go to town and show ten, I'm interested in the selection rather than quantity. (No more than ten please, anyone can list 30 songs.)

Me:

Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
Babe Im Gonna Leave You- Led Zep
Eleanor Rigby - The Beatles
Welcome to the Jungle - Guns N Roses
Like a Rolling Stone - Bobby D

I think everyone`s trying to fit into the classic rock forum here. In my opinion, much more aspects of rock n roll have been developed since the 80`s ended .

Pink Floyd - Time (full band, prog soundscape)
Alkaline Trio - Radio (simplicity & emotion)
Weezer - Only in Dreams (epicness)
The Decemberists - Grace Cathedral Hill (beauty)
Queens of the Stone Age - Song for the Dead (heaviness)

of course, the same list could be made in a million different ways.

Yes - Roundabout
Wilco - Jesus, etc.
Brand New - Limousine (MS Rebridge)
Sex & Candy - Marcy Playground (Jesus, etc. has got us covered for beauty )
Rage Against the Machine - Sleep Now in the Fire

Define "rock".

P.S.- dillon1022, there's an edit button for a reason.

band-driven youth music from 1950s-present. But really that's your call, sweetheart.

^^Well aren't you funny. My point is that simply saying "rock" is WAY too broad a term to be defined in five (ten? fifteen?) songs.

I presume this can only be properly accomplished if all songs are performed live? It would have to be:

Deep Purple - Child In Time
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love
Guns n Roses - Estranged
Pearl Jam - Alive
Jazz Funeral

Chuck Berry - Johnny B. Goode
Derek and the Dominos - Layla
Led Zeppelin - Achilles Last Stand
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Couldn't Stand the Weather
Pearl Jam - Even Flow

I'm not satisfied with this list. A five song limit is quite the constraint for defining such a long lived and versatile genre. But hell, I tried...

I don't think most bands can be "summed up" in only five songs

Black Dog - Led Zeppelin (Tight)
November Rain - Guns N' Roses (Epic)
In The Court Of The Crimson King - King Crimson (Beautiful)
Black Betty - Ram Jam (fun)
Seek & Destroy - Metallica (heavy)

i think with those songs, you'd get a pretty reasonable overview of rock

Hmmm...

1. Stariway To Heaven- Led Zeppelin
2. Paranoid- Black Sabbath
3. Anarchy in the UK- Sex Pistols
4. Cat Scratch Fever- Ted Nugent
5. Welcome to the Jungle- Guns 'N' Roses

That took a while, but I think those songs all represent rock very well ^.^

1. Paradise City - Guns N' Roses
2. Rock N' Roll - Led Zeppelin
3. War Pigs - Black Sabbath
4. Voodoo Child - Hendrix
5. Highway To Hell - AC/DC

Covers most of the bases. The gut feeling of wanting fame and fortune in Paradise City with a great guitar solo. Big 70's rock with Zeppelin. The heavier side and political influenced rock with Sabbath. Henrdix ; 'nuff said. Highway To Hell it's THE rock n roll anthem. I was gonna throw in Teen Spirit or Jeremy but this list seems to embody what rock means to me!

voodoo chile (slight return) - Jimi Hendrix Experience
Hot for Teacher - Van Halen
Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
Money - Pink Floyd
Master of Puppets - Metallica

I don't think this sums up the whole genre but it covers the parts that I'm into the most. But I feel that there are a lot more that have been very important to rock.
