If those are the only two chords, it technically could be either d major or g major. But I'll just guess that it resolves to the d, and that the most appropriate scale is the d major scale.

Err, no. Well you can but it will sound a bit weird. Notes will clash.

Try the D MAJOR SCALE.

one thing if i want to start theory especially in metal, should i start with the major scale, wand work off the modes or whats the best bet to begin. thanks.

How about you start with the major scale, study that for a solid year or so, THEN think about learning modes. If you don't have a solid grasp of tonal concepts, then modes are just going to confuse you, plus anything you might learn about modes now (correctly or incorrectly) really won't advance you much anyway.
