so back in the day i was a real metal-head, but for the past few years i've been playing mostly jazz-fusion and old rock 'n' roll, but recently someone asked if i'd like to join a metal band, I've sorta' accepted but i cant seem to get to writing any good metal riffs like i used to, anyone got any tips for writing metal riffs? or is it just that i should turn up the volume on my old maiden albums and hope it sinks in

oh yeah and, inb4 tune to drop B and play triplets at 160bpm

The best way is to listen to what you want to sound like. Last week I went to the Iron Maiden Final Frontier tour with DT (two of my fav bands), and today I came up with a maiden inspired song. It's on my profile if you would like to take a listen. It's titled "Maiden Inspired".

Good Luck!

A metalhead would know that different sub-genres have different sounds, and that fact that you "just wanna write sum metal riffs" has lead me to believe that you sir, are a cleverly disguised newb.

Anyway, metal is just noise. Is this how you really want to live your life, playing metal? Go listen to some real music for god’s sake.

I've met all the members of Dream Theater except for Myung. Recently I met Mike Portnoy. Last week actually. Yes Petrucci's arms are huge. He uses those bulk up shakes on tour lmao. Don't listen to the person below you. There is good and bad metal, just as there is good and bad blues, rock, instrumental, classical etc.. He's calling you a newb, but he's actually a newb to music.

im sorry i know this is just the internets, but this is pretty f*cking rude, no i don't "just wanna write some metal riffs" im not some dumb-ass metal-roaring-oaf and i have a wide musical taste and i try to write riffs and play the music which i enjoy on my guitar, and is this how i want to spend my life? no, i just wanted to form a band with a few old friends and play the music we all used to head-bang and sing along to, don't just degrade metal music because they decided that they wanted to play music that's just a little more aggressive than other styles, now GTFO!

Sure is angsty in here.

Anyway, the difference in sound between the tons of different sub-genres warrants some extra information about what type of metal you're actually trying to play.

i believe i mentioned maiden in the thread? and that's the sort of metal we're aiming for, a melodic type NWOBHM sound with influences from the other music i listen to that would occur naturally in my writing and playing anyway.

Pedal tones, gallop rhythms, minor keys, blues based riffs and solos, progressions revolving around the i-iv-VI in power chord form, repetition of motifs, harmonising in 3rds/octaves.

Which could turn out to be a lot of things, depending on you're phrasing etc.

Wow, you really are ignorant, are you not?

These '' genres '' and '' subgenres '' you speak of, are just labels, they don't mean anything

You can never define music, for it is undefinable and infinite in it's continuity, there is no such thing as '' playing metal '' or '' playing jazz '' or '' playing rock and roll ''

Grow up, and for Satans sake man, don't tell people what to listen to or what to do, there is no such thing as '' real music ''

The amount of stupidity in your post just astounds me, if you freed your mind you could be an intelligent person like me

If you have to come to a forum populated by 99% mongos to ask advice on how to play metal, you are not, and more than likely never have been a metal fan. Sorry to burst your bubble! Stick with the jazz and pull sexy art college girls with it instead.

I want to try that while playing the opening riff to "Tempting Time".

0-0-0-13-0-0-0-0-13 or something like that alalalala but It;s so heavy and off time and awesome and you could not f**k anyone to it.

I wont lie that dude is obviously trolling/being a useless dick, but are you fucking retarded? Those "labels" certainly do mean something, and the different kinds of music are defined by these labels, fool. Blues and it's characteristics are different from Ambient, which is different from Metal awhich is different form Humpaa Folk music which is different then Salsa etc hence why the labels work, so that you can actually differ between the styles, it's not one giant genre called music dude...

incorporate your jazz-fusion riffs with the rest of the band's heaviness, there's a good chance the rest of your bandmates will hate it... But I'll like it

EDIT: or just add no heaviness and be pure jazz-fusion

Yeah, it's quite impressive music. The sexy art college girls who come with it are an added bonus.

This

I also rec looking for threads vg or powerslave have made. They have exquisite taste in NWOBHM. that you broaden your metal knowledge and show you various song writing styles rather then sounding like another maiden clone

Well it really depends man, what '' genre '' of metal did you used to listen to?

If you liked Maiden, then i'd say give Judas Priest,Venom,Dark Angel,Metallica a go

But you've probably already heard most if not all of these bands, but, again, what kind of metal?
