My friend and fellow guitarist in my band claims that a 100w tube head is the "standard" for a gigging amp. He has a 100w MA half stack (click). I've been talking about wanting to eventually get the new Orange Thunder 30 head coming out soon, maybe a Rockerverb 50 if I could somehow get the money. He says that it wouldn't be loud enough/sound good enough to gig with. I say that that's bullshit and that a 30w tube head, whether it be orange, or whatever else, would sound perfectly fine gigging.

Anyone want to back me up? Or prove me wrong?

This. The MA is really not that good for what it costs.

Besides that, as long as you mic it up, you'll be fine for a gig anyway.

100 WATT is the idiots standard, they look at the old 70's bands and think they need to have 100 watts to blast thier audience into oblivion.
The 30 will be significantly quieter, but you get to crank those power tubes harder and get a much better sound. Where he would have to destoy everyones hearing to get tone like that.

The 50 watt may even be overkill for some gigs.

But pretty much, NO ONE needs a 100W valve amp, but they certainly look cool.

yeah, a 100 watts isn't really that necessary at all, and this is coming from someone who has a 100 watt head. 30 will generally be plenty from a good quality head. either of those will do the job...
#9
Depends on the venue, but 30 watts of tube is plenty loud, I have a 40 watt Hot Rod deluxe, loudest I have ever run it for a gig is four, and the fenders go to 12, so I have only ever needed 1/3 the power. I think if you need more than 30 watts tube power you will have to mic the drums anyway. Unless your doing BIG stages aka festivals I would suggest your friend is quite mistaken.

if you like the 100 watt ma...you're gonna touch yourself when you own the thunder.
how much money do you have now and how much do you need to save up? are you in the states?

an ad30 combo for 1100 shipped. can't be beat.

if you're resourceful a used rocker30 should be about 1k then you can grab a loaded 212 for about 3. you should be good for a while with that.

though honestly, even though your friend is wrong...if you need more headroom or play clean really really loud 30 watts might not be enough. 50watts would do you then.

get a 30w amp, and turn it up to 12, and say hey man i get to run mine at max and get powertube clipping. yours run half volume and you get no powertube clipping. HAHA

When I gig with my 15w amp, I cannot get the volume over 4 without the soundguy bothering me, 30w is well enough

really? i was thinking about getting a tiny terror or a dual terror but i had heard bad things about it such as not nearly enough headroom and isn't loud enough.

i mean yeah, but it's much cheaper and seems like it's a pretty good amp, especially for the price. i could get this and then later get, say, the rockerverb 50. have this for practice/recording/small gigs and such.

ya if you already have a cab it's a cheaper option. the 15 watt will not be as loud as your buddies 100 watt marshall though. His will be about twice as loud. The dual terror is better but if you get a cab with it your in thunder 30 territory already if you have a cab then it's a good bet. Used dt's are about 550-600.

that's what i'd go for. and besides, i'm going to college so i won't be playing with him anymore minus breaks when we just jam and whatnot. $600 is much better than $1200. and if i start playing places where i'd need more, i can get the thunder or even rockerverb.

you will be playing with someone. just do the right thing, and get the good amp now.

sell yourself short on something else, buy used school books.

I've got a 60 watter and can't bear it above 11 O'clock/

That being said, wattage is not a great definition of volume, just how much power it eats up.

BTW, definitely grab the Thunder 30 (unless you can find a better deal like AM said). I was so set on one but circumstances weren't in my favour...

EDIT: IIRC, the Thunder is about $300 more than the DT? A couple weeks part time work.

No but I was so choked when the bastard robot told me and I flipped shit and killed it with fire.

No I was going to trade in a guitar hoping to get a $400-500 trade in but they told me $300 max even though I bought it from them and would be buying from them. So I traded it for a VTM60 off Kijiji. Not going there again 3V4R!!!11!
