Lately, I've been realizing that my song repertoire is complete shit and when somebody asks me to play them a song I usually don't have much to play them because I simply don't know what to play. I'm not a bad guitarist, as I spend most of my time soloing and shredding over jam tracks and playing around jimi hendrix style rhythms and such, but I simply don't know that many songs.

So this is where you come in, list your top 10 songs that you believe every decent guitarist should know. You don't need to put much thought into this, considering I'm willing to learn any song from beginner to complete advanced, as I'm a decently skilled guitarist. Any song from any genre is fine, and songs with catchy riffs and a sweet solo in the middle is a plus too.

If this is in the wrong section I apologize, wasn't exactly sure where else to post this. And before you tell me to go into the intermediate/advanced song thread, I've already been through it.

So yeahhh, post your top 10 songs, and again these can be anywhere from beginner to advanced.

Purple Haze because you are playing hendrix but the song is really easy.

Hah I'm the same way, I don't know much of the "popular" songs that everybody else knows. I should, but I can just never get into it. Pretty weird when I don't even know a song like Sweet Child O Mine

These songs are pretty much standard and the typical overplayed song that a 12yr old kid will ask you. Boring songs, but embarrassing once you realize you don't know how it goes

10. Run to the Hills - Iron Maiden
9. Breaking the Law - Judas Priest
8. Freebird - Lynyrd Skynyrd
7. Back in Black - AC/DC
6. Enter Sandman - Metallica
5. Crazy Train - Ozzy Osbourne
4. Sweet Child O Mine - Guns N Roses
3. Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
2. Iron Man - Black Sabbath
1. Smoke on the Water - Deep Purple

EDIT: But yeah, as the guy said above, any Sabbath. Not only are they really easy, but they're really fun and always sound awesome. Even if your only playing standard, the first two albums are perfect enough

Well, like a lot of people here are saying, Crazy Train's, like, probably the most known song out there on guitar. =P Another few well-known, easy songs pretty much everyone I know who plays guitars knows would be:

Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine(the inter-verse solos are pretty easy too)
Cream - Sunshine Of Your Love
Black Sabbath - Iron Man and Paranoid
Deep Purple - Smoke On The Water
AC/DC - Back In Black(and to a lesser extent Hell's Bells)
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit

Stairway's fairly well-known too but I wouldn't call the solo easy, and the song itself might be a little hard for a newbie. =P

3. Satch Boogie - Joe Satriani
4. Simple Man - Lynyrd Skynyrd
5. Over The Hills And Far Away - Led Zeppelin
6. Rock 'N' Roll Ain't Noise Pollution - AC/DC
7. The Wind Cries Mary - Jimi Hendrix
8. Little Wing - Stevie Ray Vaughan
9. Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd

Most of the songs in the list below I learned closer to the beginning of the 8 years I've been playing guitar. They were all great in helping me teach myself as I've never taken any formal lessons. These songs are also the ones that are not easily forgotten for me. Each time I learn/write a new riff or song I seem to bump some other riff or song out of my guitar memory bank. But these are the songs that always come back to me easiest, even if just a quick glance at the tab is needed to refresh myself. There are accurate and thorough tabs for all of these songs available on ultimate-guitar.com and these songs always seem to catch an ear, even if the person doesn't recognize the song or artist. I definitely agree with the lists already posted and hope this is a helpful addition for you. Hope you have fun learning/playing because I definitely have and probably always will!

In no particular order:
Eric Clapton - Tears in Heaven
Led Zeppelin - Tangerine
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Ludwig van Beethoven - Moonlight Sonata
The White Stripes - Offend in Every Way
Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
Elliott Smith - Angel in the Snow
Paul Gilbert - Hurry Up
The Beatles - Blackbird
The Animals - House of the Rising Sun

Enjoy!

some grunge is always nice too, metal isn't always the best thing to play. you don't have to show off, just play something that sounds good. really anything by alice in chains, nirvana may be a little too simple. if you do want to impress though, maybe try some alter bridge, mark tremonti is pretty damn good.

+1 for this thread to keep it alive. I work at a music store and it's pretty embarrassing to shred around or play some blues licks to demo a guitar/amp, but not know how to respond when asked "Know any ________ (band)?" I've been asked Sabbath, Van Halen, Guns', Ozzy, ect ect. I don't even listen to anything of that sort, so I gotta hear these responses.

4. Cowboys From Hell - Pantera
5. The Sentinel - Judas Priest
6. The Trooper - Iron Maiden
7. Glasgow Kiss - John Petrucci

I second the Alice in Chains notion. Great riffs in addition to complex-yet-not-flashy solos, should be just right for you. Like the dude above me said, anything by AIC is good, but I'll name a few to help:
Them Bones
Rooster
Man in the Box
We Die Young
Check My Brain
Acid Bubble
Love Hate Love
Would?
Now, as for other bands, I'll list some relatively well-known songs:
Alive-Pearl Jam
The Red-Chevelle
Jars-Chevelle (if you're willing to go down to Drop B)
My Own Summer-Deftones
Fell On Black Days-Soundgarden
Creeping Death-Metallica
Heart Shaped Box-Nirvana
Vicarious-Tool

I generally like the non-singles by bands most, so if you want some that are lesser-known but still have good guitar parts, I can add more

If you don't know Smoke on The Water you shouldn't be playing guitar. Not because it's so great and difficult or whatever...but because you'd be the one person in the world who doesn't know how to play it. Swear to god, it's instinct. Friend of mine doesn't play guitar, never has, learned the Smoke on the Water riff by ear in like 25 seconds...

Acoustic Guitar:

The Drugs Don't Work by The Verve
She Talks To Angels by The Black Crowes

It's all very well just to list your favourite songs. But if you want to be able to jam with other dudes, it's good to know songs that a lot of other people know already, are technically fairly forgiving, and leave a lot of room for extended improvisation. ie

A basic 12 bar blues
Sharp Dressed Man by ZZ Top
Living After Midnight by Judas Priest
Crossroads - the Cream version
Hey Joe by Hendrix
Keep on Rockin in the Free World by Neil Young
Johnny B Goode by Chuck Berry
Sweet Home Alabama by skynyrd
Ace of Spades by Motorhead

I'd have to say that in my guitar class at my high school, my friends and I gather around and we play everything we know and everyone knows the songs we play. I'd have to say some of the top 10 songs that should be learnt are (in no particular order)
1) Over the hills and far away
2) Welcome Home
3) Hotel California
4) Blackbird
5) Paradise City
6) Master of Puppets
7) Iron Man
8) Paranoid
9) Snow (hey oh)
10) Good Riddance.
The bands should be self explanitory as they're probably mixed throughout this thread already but if they aren't let me know. ^-^

Agreed apart from maybe the Coheed and Cambria, i'd replace that with Master of Puppets. Also liked the Hotel California, quality song, also Crazy on you is a nice piece to play especially the intro once you nail it.
