Hey guys, I'm having some trouble with this here question:

If X is the continued square root of 2 (shown in image attachment), find X algebraically. It gives a hint saying "Find X^2 in terms of X". I'm not sure what to do here, anyone up for helping?

surely X^2 is just 2+2+2+2+2+2..................

EDIT: Find X^2 in terms of X

...x^2=x^2

Actually, X is 2. I need to show how to figure that out using algebra though :P. Thanks any way

surely X^2 is just 2+2+2+2+2+2..................

I would have thought x^2 would have been 2+r2+rr2+rrr2... because it's a root of a root of a root etc so you just go up 1 root each time.

x^2 = 2 + x?

:. x^2 - x - 2 = 0

x= -2 or 1

:. x^2 - x - 2 = 0

x= -2 or 1

The square route of two is the same as 2 to the power of a half. That will help you show it algebraically.

(x - 2)(x + 1) = 0

x = 2 or -1

x^2 - x - 2 = 0

(x - 2)(x + 1) = 0
