Showing my buddy what this website can do.

Question: What music writing techniques does Joe Satrini use?

Didn't read through them all the way but his interviews might be helpful.

EDIT: If you were asking for general information about his songwriting.

Analyze his songs.

This, short of you having amazing knowledge of theory it is very difficult to break down his style of writing in general.
If you're just asking what key/chord progressions he uses in one specific song or what guitar techniques he utilises (which is pretty redundant as it's easy to pick out by ear) then you will get some help.

Broadly asking how Satch writes his songs is going to get you nowhere as he touches on many different styles.

I will most likely be proved wrong.

Satriani uses pitch axis theory. Is that interesting enough for your friend?
Oh yeah.

Go search Joe Satriani's Guitar Secrets ... it's a collection of articles he wrote for some guitar magazine. I'm not sure if it's copyright or not, but I'm sure if you look around you will find it on the internetz.

Oh yeah -- he covers pitch axis in there.

Now close this thread.

Joe doesn't use any musical techniques. He puts notes in random into a computer and it writes the music for him, completely random. Joe's gift is that he uses theory to explain how it was made on purpose
And no, Guitar Hero will not help. Even on expert. Really.
