Now, the above title is not my opinion, but the guitar seems to be the ''everyone has one'' or the ''there's one in the attic'' instrument and I have an idea why. It's cheap (lower end products obviously). I out of interest decided to look into orchestral instruments (mainly woodwind) with the slight intention of learning to play one in the future and I ended upon the Bassoon/Contrabassoon. The starting price i have seen is approx. €1500-€2000/contra bassoon=€7500! For a student instrument! Whereas a beginner guitar can be bought for approx. €100. Would people agree? (And yes i know guitars can get to abnormal prices also)
GUYS! I MEAN 1 OF MANY REASONS, NOT THE ONLY REASON.

It's a combination of that, and the fact that guitar is an instrument that is useful to pretty much any genre of music.

You can't accompany yourself playing "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz at a bonfire to pick up girls with a French horn.

Distorted accordions sound funny.

Those are two big reasons right there.

As stated before, It's easy to learn, they are cheap, and the ladies still dig a guy who plays a good guitar (anyone who thinks otherwise is full of it)

And with the new Rock Band coming out more and more people will play the guitar and then it won't be cool anymore to play guitar. I'll pick up violin again if that happens :P
I just need about $3.50

I agree. They are a bit overused though, but hey, not saying im exceptional, but it makes me feel great about MY playing abilities!

As said many time, cheap and easy to learn. Also, it's a working man's instrument. They became popular when a piano salesman gave a load to poor people to diminish their reputation with the upperclass, so that they'd go back to playing piano. (just an amusing story i thought id share there)

Fixed.

Also, guitar requires very little music theory as tablature works out so well on a fretboard, so people can pick guitar up with less difficulty than piano or any instrument that requires reading sheet music.

French Horns, saxophones, and other brass instruments aren't usually made in an assembly line like most guitars.

I don't think anyone in their right mind will buy that rock band garb when you can buy a decent squier (f*ck the haters) for as much as you can the remote. not to mention you have to pay extra for the game (I'd imagine)

Yeah that's true, but it's an easy way into playing music for a lot of people. If they can play along with a song on that Rock Band guitar they also can play it without the music since you learn wich frets to play etc.

That is true. then again, what if someone wants to play in a real band? people obviously aren't going to go watch Rock Band concerts (). What I'm thinking is if they buy those rock band remotes, they will be out of the $150 they spent on them. which, as I said, can buy you a decent guitar. So basically, I think that Rock Band will make guitar playing more popular, yet overused (as the thread title states), but the remote might eliminate people's use of the actual guitar, and or (slightly) effect their chances (or will) of buying a real guitar

You're right, but I think there will be a difference between people who buy that Rock Band and just think 'oh it's fun to play along with these songs' and that's it, but the game also introduces people to playing music (since that guitar has strings and all) and maybe people want to improve their playing by learning theory and playing songs not on the tracklist of the game. They don't have to buy a 'real' guitar since the game controller can be played through an amp and that lowers the threshold to start playing the instrument. They can use the controller until they decide to buy a decent guitar.

This is also true. now to another question, not directly on topic to the thread, however I feel that people may be questioning this. Tuning. Okay, so I can automatically assume that the guitar will be based on E standard tuning. But what about the songs on the game, what if they are based in, for example, Eb or Drop D. I personally have 2 guitars that I use for 2 different tunings (not counting the dropped tunings) because I know, as does everyone else that it is difficult to tune a guitar to a different tuning for a short amount of time, and then tune it back. not only that but I'll imagine that the strings on the guitar will come out of tune. All that being put beside for a moment, I am not sure of the layout of the remote. Does it have 6 strings going all the way down the neck, or in what other way is it designed?
