Music is sex for the ears.
Did you know the odds of a Vault-Tec shelter failing are 1,763,497 to 1?

So imagine life in a Vault-Tec Vault. Not just a future.
A brighter future... underground.

Patrolling the Mojave almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter.

I feel that music is an extesion of the emotions of the person who wrote the song. It is a form of expression just like painting, writing, sculpting, carving, or any other form of art.

The point of music is to evoke an emotional response.

Structure.

Good ideas don't make a good song. Good ideas that are fluently strung together make a good song.
No animals were harmed in order to bring you the above post. However, several photons were greatly inconvenienced.

Notes: melody, harmony, etc.

Articulation: the duration of each note, how it starts and ends

Technique: the means to reproduce what you want to play as naturally as possible

Feel: creating emotion or 'energy in motion'

Dynamics: volume, or the lack thereof

Rhythm: finding the pulse of Music, or Life

Tone: using tonality to generate emotion

Phrasing: working around the rhythm

Space: the 13th note

Listening: how what you play works with what everyone else is doing around you.

EDIT: I rephrased my main question:

What do you think an instrument should be able to do? IE what capablilities of an instrument allow you to express yourself the best?

I meant to find out (but poorly worded it) what you like in an instrument.

Rhythm.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhTRhAX_QBA

Go to a little isolated, cut-off third-world village and play some kid there this. He'll smile, nod, then go along with the rhythm, singing the chorus when it comes. Anyone will recognize it within two seconds, music comes down to rhythm as far as I'm concerned. As they say in Jazz, it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing, and whether that swing is a 4/4 rocker, a 5/4 boo-dop-badow-boo-dop-boo-dop-badow-boo-dop rendition of Take Five, a 7/5 technical progmetal doomfest, a 6/8 progressive drumming nightmare, or a 3/9 Jazz-Fusion headcutting between the entire band, drummer included, if it's not there, the music's flat.

Beyond that, just have ears and know what you want to hear. It doesn't matter if this note is out of the key or atonal or doesn't fit the same scale, if it sounds right, it is right, if it doesn't sound right, it's not right. Granted theory helps a great amount with this, but trust your ears musically before you trust your head.
