Lets say the average Joe has an 8 ohm cab. Runs amp at 8 ohms.

Now Joe buys another 8 ohm cab. Would he run at 4 or 16?

Does it cut in half or double? I think it cuts in half.

2-16 ohm cabs run amp at 8 ohm

2-8 ohm cab run amp at 4 ohm

2-4 ohm cab run amp at 2 ohm

Please correct me if this is wrong?

Wouldnt this apply to 2x12 as well as 4x12???? or 2x15 at that matter.

If a cabs wired at 8 ohms, its wired at 8 ohms regardless of speakers.

Whats a very good and simple ohm-meter???

These can be very useful unless you buy every cab brand new.

If someone can post a guide explaining all of this clearly and ug can make it a sticky or something?

No, you're right. If you have two 8 ohm cabs, you run your amp at 4 ohms. I don't know about 2x12s, but the concept should be the same.

no seriously 7x NGD is epicness i declare you the winner of all NGD's on UG never have i seen this xD

Just use the easier method: check the amp manual.
You can easily find them in the manufacturer's websites, and they tell what are the possible cab configurations for each case.

yeah and does ohms affect sound? if one guy with x amp is running 8 ohms and another guy is running the same x amp at 16ohms, will one sound different?

Yes. I'm not exactly sure how it was, but IIRC higher Ohmage means moar midz. That's probably not correct, but I'm sure I've read that it does affect tone.

ohms aren't very straighforward to start with - you just have to live with it...

They're as straightforward as normal resistances... This is 1st year high-school material man, it's not that hard.

the math is, but the concepts arent. last time i checked tehy never teach electrical resistance in detail. im about to graduate college, and ive never encountered this stuff.

As long as they are matched you can't pick the difference.

Btw, don't buy a multimeter to measure speaker impdance, it doesn't work that way. Resistance meters read dc resistamce NOT impedance which is the combination of DC and AC.

This explains how to calculate the resultant.. Speakers can be calculated like resistors (and inductance - a speaker is a resistor and an inductor). So series, add them: parallel, it's the inverse of the sum of the inverses.

The math is all you need in this case.

So where can I find a amp/cab configuration at 1.21 gigawatts?
