Found a road-worn 60's Blackface Fender Bassman that has been re-tubed with JJs and re-capped at a local vintage shop for $800, is that a good deal or should I talk him down or pass? The amp chassis is quite rusted but the cab is in decent condition. Any thoughts?

For a Blackface that's a pretty decent deal, they can go up to $1000. If you want to spend a little less try and talk him down definitely, but I'd always recommend you try it first and make sure it works.

Wait, wait... You have to ask?

Unless it needs new transformers or something, do it! 60s Bassmans are awesome.

Haha, yeah I know. He let me hook it up to a 2x12 with Vintage 30s in it and it about put my on my ass. The tones on both channel were amazing, I was just curious about the price, considering it's condition. All the electronics still work.

Yea, but no prices and they don't update it often. I'm actually planning on heading by there tomorrow if you want me to check them out and see if they've had all the maintenance performed. The only thing might be that they might have the original caps which would make that one a better deal.

It's just everyone in Austin wants to be an SRV clone so we have a ton of old Fenders around. Same with Tubescreamers and Strats. It's kinda lulz actually.

I didn't even know SRV used a Bassman until I just Wikipedia'd it. That's kinda cool though I suppose. I can see why he used it for sure.

Yea, SRV used pretty much everything. He used to run like 10-15 amps at a time when recording and pick the ones he liked best.

yeah that kinda peeves me... why be a clone of him? just get your own style/tone and play his songs! sure, i don't have a fender amp yet, i will have a real fender strat (1982 jap) soon and I have a handmade tubescreamer, but my tone is and will not be like his.

im also jelous of you americans for getting cheap amps and crap. for amps over here we would be paying like $5000 - $6000 for the exact same thing.

I see them on CL in the $400-600 range at least once a week.

In fact, there's 4 on Guitar Center's used website right now for $700 or less.

That explains why the music stores save up so much gear to sell during SXSW.

the vintage fender bassman are great amps, and because their are so many in circulation you can get them pretty cheap. I've seen a bit later models go for a little cheaper. I would try talking him down a bit, but if not $800 still wouldn't be a bad price. look at similar ebay prices, or craigslist and take it to them

I went by AVG today, neither has been recapped. A collector brought them in last week and he wanted to keep them original during the years he owned them. So with shipping and the cost of a recap, the difference is pretty much gone.
