What's a lyrical genius? You know, those guys that write lyrics that just leave you in awe. Whether it be death metal, or classic rock, or blues, or rap, or metal, or crabcore. I'm sure you guys know of a few and have your favorites. Posting examples never hurt anyone either. Discuss.

My vote goes to Eminem. I can't even think of anyone who is more of a genius than him as a writer. Recovery reminded me of how amazing he is. I started listening to it and my jaw just dropped. His old stuff is just as great but Recovery has sooooo much of creativity on it. I love it.

A UGer recently told me about Nas, whom I've never listened to beforehand, and one of his songs. Also pretty damn genius. Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6j-L2yIC4xw

There once was an envelope.

It was sent to the pope.

He opened it.

Hit face lit.

Inside was a used bar of soap.

Like that?

Josh Homme, of course. >_>

The guy's a genius.

How did it take this long to say Lennon/McCartney, Dylan, or Hendrix, not to mention the other greats in rock.

John K. Samson

Flowers, moonlight, sticky things
Songs that mean nothing, places I've been
Blood fruit, crying, old guitar strings
They're all softly poetic, smoothly obscene

I recall all those wasted snowflakes dying in the fall
And I remember those starry Eyes, rose glasses bewitch me, saw that
Our words and our bodies will always flow, like the
Cool, clear stream on the rocks below

We sat on the beach at night, and it shone fantastic
And the lake after dark looks like, looks like burn plastic
We all need a space to fall down and grow
And it's so sickly-sweet like some bad T.V. show

How could I forget Paul Westerberg?

I really like Thom Yorke and Jeff Tweedy. James Mercer is up there too. These guys write good, witty, thoughtful yet not overly pretentious lyrics, and have insightful instruments to back up the lyrics and overall vocals, which ultimately adds so much to the emotion of their songs. That's what I think anyways.

Lupe Fiasco, Sage Francis, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, GZA, Common and many others that I can't think of.

EDIT: Q-Tip and Andre 3000 have yet to be said.

Lupe Fiasco. The way he can tell a story and have it all flow so perfectly is just amazing. Plus, his lyrics are extremely intelligent.
The Cool

Jesse Lacey of Brand New. His lyrics are original, but catchy. The rhymes never sound cheesy or forced, unlike most lyrics, and he can convey emotion incredibly well.
Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don't

Blake Schwarzenbach of Jawbreaker. His lyrics can be incredibly sad and depressing, but also moving. He always has a clever, original way of saying things.
Chemistry

Those are the ones that spring to mind immediately. I'll probably think of more later.
