it can depend on the airline as to if you can put it in the overhead bin. call first to be sure. i've seen people with gig bags on board. i know someone that flew a tele back from japan on a plane in a gig bag in the overhead.

otherwise you may have to purchase a seat for it literally, or put it in the cargo hold. so a hardshell would be best in that scenario.
