Well, classic rock and alternative sounds are pretty different, but if you leave your mids around middle of the road, crank up the treble, and play with the bass, you can get yourself a good tone. With high gain stuff I like my mids around 12 o'clock with treble around 4'oclock, and on low gain I like really high mids and 12 o'clock bass and treble.

All it takes is experimentation man. Just sit with your guitar, play a little lick or riff, and mess with the settings. Repeat until you get that perfect sound.
