In contrast to pick slides, which i have no problem with, i'm having trouble doing hand slides. I talking in terms of metal mainly, so when i refer to "hand slides" i mean when you bring your hand from the top of the neck of your electric guitar and slide it down along the strings to create a scraping sound. I've seen this done and it seems like it should be easy, but whenever i do it it my hand hardly makes a sound. I'm not sure if it's me or the settings on my amp, but i play with plenty of distortion, so i don't know why that would be an issue. Can anyone tell me what i'm doing wrong?

Use your nail.

Edit: You might be refering to tapping slides. In this case you need to tap the string down and slide to another fret. It's the same as regular slides, just you tap and slide with right hand.
