Its summer and I, as a result of my having nearly endless amounts of free time, have decided to build a stringed instrument. I have never done an instrument build before, so I was wondering what the easiest type of stringed instrument to build. I wanna build an actual instrument, so not like a cigar box violin or rubber band guitar. Does the Pit have any suggestions as to what instrument I should try to build?

Diddley Bo.

If that doesn't do it for you, then lap steel guitar. It's essentially a plank of wood with strings and hardware. No frets, no neck joint.

Was gonna post a rubber band guitar... Now I have nothing.
The plan was to drink until the pain over.
But what's worse, the pain or the hangover?
Who am I? I'm a titan so be expectin' a clash.

Any idea where I could get plans and/or instructions on how to build a lap steel?

A Ukelele would probably be the easiest to just striaght up build. Seems to be the most simple.

Yeah it would be. But I bet its really hard too. I originally was gonna make a violin. But then I looked up how to make one and saw how hard it was. So I decided to start with something easier.

You could make a theremin. Granted, the cheap way of making one will end you up with a theremin that sounds more like a fart machine, but you can buy a kit as well from Moog, even though that's a little less satisfying.

But I'm also totally with everyone else on making a Didley Bow like Jack White.

But that looks so easy. I'd feel like I was cheating Plus I wanna be able to play whatever instrument I make. And I don't really envision myself playing a didley bow a lot.

What kind of farm has guitar pickups lying around?

Also: you can use piezo buzzers, small speakers (eg. earphones) and microphones from an old telephone headset as crude pickups.

My kind of farm?

Yeah, go for the Didley. It's essentially a plank of woody awesomeness.

Probably not what you're looking for, but this was easy enough (if ya have a milling machine) and cost all of a few bucks.

A washtub bass is probably the simplest. My friend built a whamola which is pretty awesome though too.

I build cigar-box guitars (and other instruments). Likely a diddley-bow is the easiest to make, after all you're only dealing with one string. Making an electric one is only a tad more involved; a simple single-pickup or piezo is really easy.
Cigar-box guitars are pretty easy as well, and sound great.

I suggest going to Cigar Box Nation:

Where we have plans, instructions, videos, audio recordings, and anything else you can think of.
Have fun!

build a diddley bow.

or if you want something with more strings a cigar box guitar. I've done both and they're great fun.
