So pit... in about 4.5-5 hours I've got to roast a chicken for me and the rest of my family to eat.

The actual roasting of a chicken isn't going to give me any trouble but I have one simple request:

Any ideas to make the whole thing a bit more interesting? Like, basic things I can do with the chicken to make it a little more interesting to eat?

goose fat, roast potatoes and bacon. maybe a bit of lemon juice on it.

Don't have the goose fat, would that still work well without?

I actually always find goose fat gross with roast potatoes, I cook them by boiling potatoes for 10 minutes, taking them out and putting them in a pea/rice strainer, putting a large blob of butter in with them and shaking it up loads so they get all scuffed up and buttery then roast them.

All the recipes I see say to do it with cooking oil or goose fat, but I think they're the nicest when done with butter.

Wrap it in bacon...although it's not a very traditional roast then.

Goose fat is good to baste it with, but you have none...

Erm, I dunno. Stuffing and bacon is normally good though.

depends on what taste you want take this^ option if you want to be healthy. To be honest i spread it on the chicken as well, i put a load of other stuff on too but thats when i cook for myself as i like unusual combinations. But no you don't need goose fat.
Try putting an orange inside as well, bit more flavour.

Stab it all over with a knife.

You gonna make sure those things are dead.

Wait, no..

Rub spices/seasoning into the.. holes created from the knife

Slide some fresh rosemary UNDER the chicken skin. Roast the chicken standing up on an opened beer can. Baster it with fresh butter throughout the roasting process. Stuff it with wild mushrooms.

This. Streaky bacon will keep the bird basted, plus once it's done, the bacon is crisp and extra delicious.

Remember, though, if you stuff the cavity you have to account for the extra weight in the cooking time.

Butter is fat too you know

Not more healthy but they go more crispy this way. Whenver I've had roast potatoes cooked with goose fat they are rock hard on the outside, it's like a mission trying to cut into them

Been suggested, but rosemary or other herbs for seasoning.

Garlic, inside and out works too. But not everyone's cuppa.

I'm sorry to contradict but butter is not fat. Butter is like bacon fat. It's made of 50% taste, 45% awesomeness and 5% fat ONLY.

Actually...it's mostly fat.

Fat 81 g
saturated 51 g
monounsaturated 21 g
polyunsaturated 3 g
Protein 1 g
Vitamin A equiv. 684 μg (76%)
Vitamin D 60 IU (15%)
Vitamin E 2.32 mg (15%)
Cholesterol 215 mg

Now admittedly they haven't actually included awesomeness or taste into their chart, which is a bit of a let down really, but still.
