Hey there fellow UG'ers. I am interested in learning how to play piano/keyboard. I was wondering what is a good keyboard to start off with. Something not too expensive but still of good quality.

I was thinking the Yamaha NP30

Is this good? or could you guys suggest something better.

Also, I heard that once you know guitar it is very easy to learn keyboard. Would it be worth it to take piano lessons or should i just teach myself. I already have played some stuff on keyboard before and it seems kinda straight forward.

Just go with something from Yamaha.
I got one.
Not performance worthy but a great practise tool.
This is why we can't have nice things!

Yes the Yamaha will do the trick and make sure you take lessons. Really the only thing beneficial about guitar that can help you with piano is if you have a solid foundation with the notes and chord construction.

Piano is not like a guitar where you have your major chord patterns or scale patterns and now just move them to the appropriate key, it is constantly changing as you shift things around. You really have to start focusing more on the number of tones/semi-tones between notes due to the linearity of the keyboard.

Yeah, I have that and for the money it's not bad at all. Too bad Asio4all no longer seems to work in Windows 7

Anyway, TS, if you're going for a complete keyboard and not just a midi controller the Yamaha PRS E313 is not a bad choice.

The only thing I'd recommend is to make sure that the keyboard has weighted action, keyboards that don't just feel naff in my opinion.

That keyboard, or more spesificly MIDI controller, gives you a great quality for its price.

Yeah, I think the problem is that I should probably look for an update.
