I have this sound stuck in my head, and I don't know how to get it out.

It's like... western? I guess. I don't know how to describe it, which is part of my frustration.

It's like this kind of sound, at about 1:02: (It's kind of hard to hear, I don't know why it's so weak in the mix, it doesn't sound that way in the movie.)

If the kind of sound I'm looking for makes any sense, could you point me in the right direction for obtaining it? Or if it's too vague, I can try to explain better somehow...

It's timpani I believe.

?

I don't think we're thinking about the same parts.

No, not that. Isn't a timpani a type of drum/percussion?

Turn your amp's cleans up loud, add some reverb, and use a Strat on the bridge pickup.

That's kind of what I was thinking, definitely reverb, and I figured maybe I need single coils.

Anything else?

You could also maybe try adding a tiny bit of dirt. What I'm thinking is you want something kinda like the Dr. No theme from James Bond when the guitar comes in?

just play a lot of coheed and cambria(the epic songs not the uber-happy ones), thats about the closest thing I can think to that. Check out "Welcome Home"

pretty sure thats a bass

No, it's definitely a guitar.

TS, try what Raijouta said and remember to pick fairly close to the bridge. A bridge single coil, a clean amp with reverb and the right picking technique is all you need to pretty much nail that tone.

You can all experiment with a slide and/or volume swells. I think a lot of nice, trailing reverb is the best suggestion so far though.

Pffffft. You trying to tell me about Coheed? Pfffft

And yeah, the James Bond thing isn't really what I'm thinking of. But iampeter has the right idea.

I guess I need a guitar with single coils now. What a pain in the ass.

Do you think it'll matter if it's mahogany or alder? I know strats are alder, and that contributes to their strat sound, but I think this'd be a good opportunity/justification to get the Ibanez SA260 I've been eyeballing for like a year

the james bond theme is a combination of guitar and bass. although you can play the bass line on guitar, but not at the same time
