Also, I thought he's arguing what is responsible for gravity, not that it's a "myth".
#7
Well I just threw my cat out of the window, and have concluded that gravity definitely exists.

Well we went to the moon based on our knowledge of gravity, so I'd probably say that it does exist.

yeah im no scientist but there are like pools of gravity between the planets and moons and we used that math of gravity to land on them and shit, this man talks balls

Read the article.

“For me gravity doesn’t exist,” said Dr. Verlinde, who was recently in the United States to explain himself. Not that he can’t fall down, but Dr. Verlinde is among a number of physicists who say that science has been looking at gravity the wrong way and that there is something more basic, from which gravity “emerges,” the way stock markets emerge from the collective behavior of individual investors or that elasticity emerges from the mechanics of atoms."

meths might have to come in here and clarify or verify some of this since i'm still learning, but very interesting.

I think people are misunderstanding slightly. He's not saying gravity doesn't exist, he's saying that it might be a result of something a lot simpler than dark matter and what have you.

Not that I have a clue what he's on about. Maybe it was the article, but I didn't really get much from it.

Well seeing as how cause and effect are merely associations created by the mind - it very well could be.

EDIT - "a respected string theorist "

yeah..so the rest of you guys can just stfu right now, he's way out of our leagues

I don't really get it. I mean, I understand that he's trying to say that gravity is basically caused by entropy, but I don't see (at the very least not in this article) what led him to that conclusion. Or to the conclusion that gravity had to be caused at all, for that matter. It would be far more interesting if we had the whole story.

Yeah I understand that, I just don't really get where he's coming from. I don't understand how entropy could relate to gravity.

Once we pin down the "whole" story gravity will be understood. As it stands now gravity can be detected and measured but its true reason for being is not known.

You know, i'm starting to think some people in the pit get abit out of their depth when it comes to advanced science. I've heard meths and others say string theory is all crap, funny how UG has the answer when a lot of the leading scientists havn't even decided yet. -_-

What the hell is this guy smoking??

So says Erik Verlinde, 48, a respected string theorist and professor of physics at the University of Amsterdam, whose contention that gravity is indeed an illusion has caused a continuing ruckus among physicists, or at least among those who profess to understand it.

Ahh, that explains it.

Agreed, however, it's also the fact that people will read only the headlines, rather the article, and formulate their opinion based on that.

Well, what I actually meant by 'the whole story' was the paper Verlinde published, so I can at least see where he got his idea. The article makes it seem like he just deduced that gravity has a cause from observing entropy.

Interesting!
Of course, it's jibberish, but interesting none-the-less.
On playing the Paul Gilbert signature at the guitar store extensively, my missus sighed:
"Put it down now, It's like you love that guitar more than me!"
In Which I replied.

It's not falsifiable, I certainly wouldn't go all "String Theory is tr00 and if you disagree u s00x!11" because, yeah, it's not falsifiable.
